“Cracking Value - Shipmate”
Reviewed July 12, 2013

I have stayed in the UJC many times. Can be very good value if you don't mind walking to your bathroom. Rooms aren't huge. However location is superb and represent great value for money.

Public rooms are VG and the bar area welcoming. I highly recommend the various meeting rooms, which I have used for various meetings.

Perfect for serving and ex-serving to stay in London. Highly recommended

Just returned from an overnight stay here. It's a great place. Location is central. Rooms are small and basic but spotlessly clean. Staff are pleasant and helpful. Food & drink is very cheap (£3 a pint) and very good quality.

I'll definitely return here in the future!!

I have stayed at the UJC on many occasions for the past 10 years on business. It has never failed to impress. As the previous reports are very accurate, the UJC is a registered charity which offers 1st class accommodation , food and service in the heart of London for half the price of the main chain hotels. It does not have a pool, gym or air con in the rooms but what it has is the quality of residents that has made Britain GREAT! It provides what you want within the city walking distance to covent garden, the strand, London eye and the south bank . It is London's best kept secret.

There are no frills to this UJC but the rate is good and the location is convenient. Staying 8 nights in a double room with ensuite. When I say basic, I mean basic! There are no pictures on the walls or clock radio by the bed. A small flat screen tv juts out awkwardly from a pillar. They must have upgraded as a post I had read spoke of 4 fuzzy channels which is no longer the case. The bed, sheets, towels are all good. It is spartan, clean, simple and small in comparison to North American hotel rooms but I have no way of comparing the size to other UK rooms. Don't expect AC either! The upper story rooms have fantastic views. I was on the 16th floor and had an unobstructed NW view of the city.

As for amenities, there is a restaurant on site that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner; a bar, a coffee bar and a laundrette. Cant comment on these as I never used them. No gym or fitness areas. The reception area is like the rooms, basic and simple.

The location is awesome, right next to the Waterloo Underground/Train station. However, if your room faces the station, it will be noisy in the early morning. I'm a light sleeper so was easily woken each day.

Overall, for the price and location, stay at the UJC,

Room Tip: Stay in the double digit floors to get a good view. Avoid the side facing Waterloo if you are a ligh...

This is primarily the club for non-commissioned members of the Armed Forces but does welcome many others particularly the emergency services and the civil service. It is in a great location, amazingly cheap for the area and very well looked after. The foyer is full of military history but not in an oppressive way. There is a mini coffee shop it the style of a Costa or Starbucks but at half the price and the bar is far cheaper than standard London prices. The rooms have all of the basics and are spotlessly clean and are available for families, couples or single travellers alike. Some come without en-suite but that is reflected very well in the price. The staff are all very helpful indeed. They also do packages covering shows and sightseeing etc. If you're looking for a very reasonable stay and a great base for anything London has to offer then look no further!!

I have stayed in the UJC a couple of times previously on business and stayed in a single room, which are very basic. This time we visited London with the Grandchildren, and stayed in a family room which was a plusher in our main bedroom and the en-suite, but the kids room was pretty small with just enough room for bunkbeds and a TV. I would say that the rooms are of an adequate standard, but good value for its perfect location in Central London right next to Waterloo Station. Handy baggage room if you arrive before checking in time so you can drop your bags off in the morning and go and see the sights during the day. I would definitely recommend the restaurant, the breakfast is extensive and good value and the evening meals are of a high quality but with a price that you are unlikely to match for a similar quality meal elsewhere in Central London. Service was of a decent standard, although I have had to wait at reception for several minutes before being attended to. I recommend the UJC, do not expect opulent luxury it is a decent standard hotel with a very good restaurant and It was only the basic standard of the rooms that decided me on rating average rather than very good
