“Wonderful, wonderful new Hackney cafe”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 15, 2013

I adore this place, as do most of Hackney by the popularity it seems to be reaching amongst my friends. A really wonderful menu with all sorts of mixed items from around the world. Fry-up is great, as are the pancakes for breakfast, and we've been for lunch and had great sandwiches, cake a coffee. My American partner loves that they sell pour-over coffee on top of the usual Hackney flat-white option. Staff are friendly, and the whole place is fresh, and nicely designed with comfortable seating. After tiring of the Mess Cafe a loooong time ago, this is our new favourite place and I recommend it to anyone for enjoys good food and coffee.

“A rare gem...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 15, 2013

Clapton Square is a charming and often overlooked corner of Hackney, beyond the bustle of Mare Street and the slightly scruffy Narrow Way - Dreyfus is a welcome addition.

I have been in many times now for a cuppa and a slice of cake, and have found the staff to be polite and enthusiastic, and the cakes delicious. You can either sit up by the window and watch the world go by, or in the more cosy seated area to the back.

Looking forward to going for lunch one day in the near future!

“Very odd opening and kitchen hours for a cafe.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 9, 2013

Four of us visited on a Saturday at 3:10pm but left without spending any money. We were unable to order any food because the kitchen closes as 3pm even though, on a Saturday, the cafe is open until 5pm. Weird. Who even gets out of bed early on a Saturday - most people have late lunches on a Saturday don't they? We couldn't even order a sandwich. Why do they need a chef to make a sandwich??

It's a shame because it looks a nice place. Looked at their website just now and it says they are closed on Mondays. but open until 8pm Tuesday - Friday, however the kitchen still closes at 3pm on those days too. Even more weird. Perhaps only visit if you want a coffee or a piece of cake.

Thanks for the feedback. Sorry we'd sold out of the ingredients needed to offer sandwiches when you visited. It reflects the pattern of custom; on Saturdays, 90% of that day's customers will have been and gone by 3pm and most customers after that time are after tea or coffee and cake.

A cafe with a footfall-heavy, city-centre site, or on a busier commercial strip such as Broadway Market, would be foolish to close the kitchen at 3pm. But we're in a different kind of location.

As an independent, neighbourhood café and a relatively new business, we're not yet in a position to offer a full late-afternoon and evening service. We've already stretched our chef to work six days a week and there is insufficient demand, as yet, to justify taking on a second - so 3pm seems the fairest cut-off point, given that most of our business is breakfast and brunch.

However, we are trialling later opening hours on weekdays and can offer a few dishes after the kitchen closes; these are indicated on our menu. We do our best to make our kitchen hours known by displaying them on our website, the menus and the A-board outside. We hope to expand our evening service in the future. Apologies again for your disappointment on Saturday.
