“Great Vibe, Good Cocktails”
Reviewed December 1, 2012

Live music, great vibe, funky retro decor. Good cocktails. I prefer it here to Barrio Central which is very small in comparison. We didnt have food here so we could comment on it. But on the cocktails alone we would come back to this bar again. Even the toilets were funky and we love the cubical with two toilets in. Do people really go to the same toilet together? hahhahaha. Its a fun place .

“Barrio East needs to head back west to the Americas”
Reviewed November 23, 2012

Me and my boyfriend were walking through Shoreditch when we stumbled upon the recently opened Barrio East in Shoreditch. Being a big fan of another famous Mexican street food restaurant in London we thought we would give this restaurant a try.

Inside the décor is charming if a little plastic with private booths alongside friendly open seating. We arrived during happy hour so were pleased to sample a pre-set list of 5 cocktails which were stunning though hardly exotic.

As we were hungry we ordered a selection of dishes to feast on while we went through the cocktail list. However this is where our bad luck began.

To say this is drunk bar food may be a little generous and we wondered at times if the kitchen situated at the far back of the venue was in fact in another location entirely due to each dish being cold on arrival. While the waiting staff were polite, friendly and apologetic we felt there was only so many times you could ask to send something back before you came across irritating.

We ordered the Potato Bravas, Calamari, Spare Ribs, Chicken Pancakes and Empanadas.

As a vegetarian I couldn’t comment on the meat but was told the Calamari was undercooked with the batter soft and unappetising though it did arrive with a beautiful sauce even if we had our suspicions it was made externally. The spare ribs and chicken pancakes I was told were cold and average with nothing special about them.

My potato bravas while cold (a constant theme in this review) was also soggy and had a feint feeling of microwaved food.

The Empanadas was a unlikeable frozen creation. Iceland please take note, supposedly adding a touch of flour when serving gives the impression of home cooked food.

If you want a fun cocktail venue in Shoreditch with cheap drinks and a party atmosphere then Barrio East could be worth a try, however if you are peckish then there are far better venues to visit!
