“Already very nice, but could do better”
Reviewed August 7, 2013

First of all, I have to admit that I was staying in the hotel on a very competitive "Jetsetter.com" rate. So maybe the service would have been better if staying on a regular rate, but then again this shouldn't be a criterion. Also, the rooms themselves are great and the location very handy for both business and leisure (in particular in East London). But now to the details:

Cons:
- Nothing regarding the rooms - all great there (see below).
- Only major issue was that the hotel's roof terrace was closed for private events both nights of my stay (Friday night and the whole of Saturday). I had made an appointment with one of my friends on Friday night to meet on the roof terrace for cocktails and was very disappointed to find out that this was impossible. I also wanted to hang out on the terrace during Saturday - again not possible.
- Staff's reaction was slightly all over the place - everyone was very friendly and apologetic and different people tried to find a solution. Eventually, the hotel's reaction was to provide me with a late check-out until 15:00 on Sunday. I did not find this particularly adequate as hotels are usually not booked Sunday night. So basically, the hotel gave nothing away, but still sold it as a great gesture. I would have much more appreciated if the hotel had invited me for one of the breakfasts or the drinks I have had in the hotel.

Pros:
- Very friendly, if slightly clueless staff.
- Very nice rooms.
- Particularly good: Bathroom amenities of James Heeley.
- Location excellent for both business and leisure.

Overall, I would stay again, but only if I was certain that the roof terrace could be used (at least in the summer).

New "hip" hotel in the financial district of City of London. When I travel for business, I would prefer to have things that work rather than be hip. Example, in my hotel bathroom they have one of those overhead rain shower heads. That's nice but there is no soap dish in the shower, so no place to put your soap or shampoo except on the floor. Other examples abound- bedside clock that is on the wrong time and is too complex to figure out how to reset the time, B&O television that blacks out every couple of minutes.

If your ego is such that you need the affirmation of this kind of hip hotel, then this place may be for you. I would prefer someplace where things were simple and worked. But that is just me.

One of the best hotels I've stayed in when in London.

Rooms are huge, clean and nicely decorated. Bed and bathroom are also perfect!

I enjoyed the gym, sauna and steam baths as well.

Dinner and breakfast are a bit pricey but delicious!

Definitively recommended!

We stayed at South Place Hotel for 5 days and from the minute we arrives to the minute we left the staff were absolutely fantastic! We really couldn't have asked for a more friendly and helpful team of people. We had a King Bedroom which was hands down the most luxurious hotel room I have ever stayed in. During an extremely hot week in London we were kept happy with the fantastic almost silent air con and eletric black out blinds. We found ourselves spending a lot more time in our room than planned due to the ambient mood lighting, the very comfy bed, the extensive collection of premium drinks in the Minni bar and the lavish bathroom. All three bars within the hotel were very quirky and enjoyable to relax in, our favourite being the outdoor terrace bar on the 7th floor. The food in each of the restaurants was to die for. Both offered a lovely dining experience and both excelled on their ability to produce amazingly tasty food. The same can also be said for our room service breakfast! The Hotel had a number of great facilities and we didn't get a chance to use them all, topping off our stay though was the superior spa with sauna and steam room leaving us feeling refreshed and relaxed at every opportunity. Especially the day after the night before! The location of the Hotel was also a winner for us with a tube station round the corner the Hotel is central and allowed us to get all over London in relatively short amounts of time. We would stay here again and again and are very much looking forward to our next stay here!

Dear PaulPrendergast,

Thank you very much for taking the time to leave your comments, they are really appreciated. I am thrilled to learn that you enjoyed your stay so much, and that you had a chance to try the bars and restaurants. As you can imagine the 7th floor terrace was one of our most popular spaces this summer.

We look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel soon.

We stayed here for one night on Saturday as we were in London to see a show at the o2 Arena.
We arrived early 11.30am and we told we could check in no problem which was nice. The rooms are incredible (we had 317 standard) and every minute detail has been though of. Good size, big bathroom with massive double shower and separate bath, all the toiletries you would need. The minibar is really well stocked though we didn't indulge :) Fresh lemons/limes provided etc.. even a discreet black silk bag revealed some extras you may need later on in the evening if you know what mean wink wink. (see picture)
Everything was high end/spec. Loved it. The same with the rest of the place, very comtemporary and stylish.
We felt the pillows too soft so got them changed to firm ones at turn down no problem what so ever. The lighting system is great and black out blinds too, everything electronically operated.
We really could not find fault with this place, the staff are just so polite and attentive in their service it was a joy.

The same unfortunately could not be said about the area, I admit I have never stayed in the "city" before, we usually stay in Mayfair/Chelsea/Marylebone. Its extremely quiet on a saturday day or night. When we arrived and explored the area around mid day everywhere was shut!! it was like a ghost town, such a strange feeling in London. We found somwhere to eat eventually but it was bizarre, even Starbucks and Costa were shut! When we returned that night after eating in Marylebone at 9.50pm we entered the pub on the corner by the hotel and she said we would need to drink up quick as they were closing at 10pm?? so strange? We decided to check out the hotel for drinks and the main ground floor bar was completely empty not one person in there. So we went up to the next bar on floor 2, that was shut too. We went up to the roof terrace which was open until late but only another couple were up there and it put a bit of a dampner on the evening as we felt we should just cut it short at 10.30! instead of traipsing the streets.
This is not the fault of the hotel but it is somehting you should bear in mind if you want to have a few before retiring for the night. Not sure if it always like this or maybe we were unlucky but it would put me off staying in this area again which is a shame as this was our favourite London hotel so far by a mile having stayed at 4/5 others. Im sure in the week its buzzing with all the city workers, but not this weekend or maybe any? If you prefer a quiet time then pick this place definately its amazing.

Dear Jaki07,

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave your feedback. I am thrilled that you enjoyed your stay at the hotel, and that we are now your favourite hotel in London - that's quite an achievement!

The area immediately next to the hotel can indeed be a bit quiet at weekends, but really lively areas such as Shoreditch, Old Street and Hoxton are all just a few minutes’ walk away. With that in mind we have produced a guide to the local area, and our Concierge staff are always happy to give recommendations and information about exciting events taking place.

I hope we can welcome you again soon at the hotel so you can explore our more exciting neighbourhoods.

Best regards,
Bruce

South Place is in a convenient location, 5 minutes away from Liverpool Street Station, making it a quiet yet very accessible destination for reaching central London.

Because it was our one year anniversary, I requested a surprise bed of flowers. On arrival, we were pleasantly surprised, by not only the beautifully laid out flowers, but also a chocolate brownie with Happy Anniversary written on the plate.

The front desk was very helpful, providing us with all the information we needed. The service was excellent delivering room service quickly. The room was very chic; the black out blinds were perfect, along with the lighting (allowing a bright room or a perfectly dimmed light for our romantic evening). The cleanliness of the hotel was exceptional. The only flaw was the pillows, which were too soft. But all in all, a wonderful experience. I would definitely revisit the hotel in the future.

Dear mangoCooper,

Thank you so much for taking the time to pass on your comments. I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay at South Place Hotel. We do in-fact have a selection of pillows available but perhaps we have not been very good in communicating this - we will address this immediately. We hope to see you at the hotel again soon.
