Description: The Pig and Butcher occupies a handsome pub built in the mid 1800's on what was fields used by farmers to rest and feed their livestock before being sent to Smithfield's Meat Market. We have brought the pub back to it's roots and receive carcasses straight from the farm and butcher them on site. We specialise in rare breeds such as White Park cattle, Iron Age pigs and Hebridean lamb while our friend Seb at Chart Farm supplies our game - if you haven't tried his venison you haven't lived! In summer we grill over coal and wood on our specially built Robata grill. In winter we brine, cure, smoke and braise.Vegetables come from Kent and are as good and as fresh as anything you'll find in this country. Our fish is supplied by Rupert on the south coast. He calls us in the morning and tells us what the day boats have caught and what he has. This is one of the reasons our menu changes so much - we literally don't know what fish we'll be serving until we have spoken with Rupert! We take our inspiration from farmhouse tables across Europe. Food is served simply and with little fuss! Share lots of small plates or a single big plate. We like the idea of bringing conversation back to the dining table and what better way to do it than sharing/stealing food? Think of food as Granny used to make…

We had a great meal at the Pig and Butcher. Couldn't fault the food, the roast lamb was cooked to perfection, lovely side dishes and the best creamed leeks I have ever tried. For a pretty reasonable price too (by London standards)

One thing that they need to decide is if its a pub or a restaurant. Plenty of tables that are supposedly for eating, being used by people wanting to sit and drink (hardly a crime). We were told it would be 45 mins for a table, only to wait for over an hour and a half. They need to work on managing expectations better.

But I'll be visiting again, this time with a booking

Had a very lovely meal here. We didn't book, but we were lucky to get a table after a wait of no more than 10 minutes. Would book next time!

We shared the rib of beef and it was cooked to perfection with sides of chips! A wonderful pesto sauce accompanied it. It was tender, and melt in the mouth perfection.

The restaurant was full, mainly with locals - a great sign!

Shared a sticky toffee pudding for dessert!

The staff are knowledgeable and helpful, and friendly. Thanks, will visit again.

I'm lucky enough to live just 3 minutes down the road from this pub as it is, in my opinion, one of the best gastropubs in the whole of London. What a 360 degree turn this place has done since it was The Islington Tap!

The Sunday roasts here are phenomenal, certainly miles better than the much-lauded nearby Albion. You have to book in advance though as tables go quick. The good thing though is that they do serve them until late (up to about 8pm).

This place is so popular you're best ringing ahead whenever you go there just to make sure you can get a spot. It's worth it when you do. The crowd here is always friendly (definitely less hipster-y than their sister pub, The Princess of Shoreditch) and the food has never been anything less than delicious.

We have been fans of the pig and butcher for a while now but sadly our meal there last night was a big disappointment. Everything was undercooked and very average in taste considering the prices. When sent back we were told that is how it is meant to be! Real shame as was one of our favourite places to eat.

I had an absolutely lovely dinner here with my parents recently. The staff were very friendly and helpful, my Dad was very chuffed with the selection of bottled beers, and the ambience was nice. It was roast dinners on the menu, which came with delicious roast potatoes and huge yorkshire puddings. We all went away saying how nice it was and how we would definitely be back... until that night when my Mum started being sick. Now it should be mentioned that my Mum has a more sensitive stomach than many. But, knowing this, she had carefully stayed away from the beef and lamb - both served rare - in favour of the pork - and still ended up with food poisoning. (My Dad had the lamb and I had the beef, and we were both fine).

It makes me very sad but I shan't be risking eating here again. It's a shame, because it was really nice, but it completely spoilt the last day of my parents' mini break, as my Mum spent the day in bed instead of going to Highgate Cemetery as we had planned. A real shame.

If you do go, earlier is better than later. I booked our table for 7.30 and was warned that they would "want the table back" at 9.30. When we were there however, it soon because clear that this was not because they had another booking, but because they were packing up to go home!

This is not a review - this is a libellous claim. This is a serious allegation that you have not even contacted us about. We treat food poisoning allegations with the seriousness that they deserve. We employ an independent company to advise and audit our food safety and have strict policies for all food safety matters and matters regarding the investigation of alleged food poisoning.

We served 318 meals on the day in question and as yet have had no other allegations. We have records of all the meat and fish that we used that day - when the products were delivered, the temperature the products arrived at, the temperature the products were stored at and the serving temperatures.

Food poisoning allegations need to involve a process of medical investigation to rule out viruses like the Noro Virus and the possibility of picking up bugs and such on public transport, etc. A medical investigation will trace the bacteria causing the symptoms and help identify what food stuff has caused any poisoning. A full investigation also needs to be carried out at our end with information from the guest to what they ate, whom they came into contact with, did they share food, etc. We can then look at our records and contact the farms and fishermen we use to check their records.

To have 1 person out of 318 contract food poisoning is highly unlikely (not impossible) but without following due procedure it is impossible to say what your Mother contracted.

Why you think this is a matter for trip advisor and not us directly reveals more about you as a person than our hygiene standards.
