“Great value hotel in a great part of London”
Reviewed August 14, 2012

It was as good as we expected (we knew there was no toilet in the room, so that didn't shock us, and we never once had to queue for it with strangers). For the price, really 60% less than anywhere else during the olympics, it was great. excellent location, next to the British Museum Russell Sq park which is lovely for breakfast in the caff before heading out for the day. Staff had already helpfully set up an extra bed. Easy for the tube, which got us everywhere we needed to go in central London very well, and was easy for Heathrow too, being the Piccadilly Line, and in a very quiet street for a central location. A few suggestions: if you are going to have a shower opening straight into the bedroom, some frosted rather than clear glass might make some guests feel more comfortable about showering in front of room mates. And there was a wardrobe but not really any drawers to store clothes in. Didn't eat there, and assume the prices are designed to discourage you from doing so and just get breakfast in nicer places nearby, which is the best thing to do anyway.

Room Tip: 106 was at the back, very quiet, nice big window, room for an extra bed

Stayed here in January 2011 and really didn't enjoy the experience. The first thing I should mention is that there is communal toilets for standard rooms. The room we stayed in had the shower in the bedroom i.e. you stepped out of the shower directly into the bedroom and unto the carpet which was a surreal experience! Very worn and uncared for unfortunately but is a great location. There was generally a feeling of unease and I had my fiancé come to the bathroom with me which is never a good sign. The photos (as most hotels display) are not a true representation of what you get and is overpriced - you could get better.

We stayed at the Lancaster for 2 days, we payed very little as we took advantage of a special, the hotel itself is lovely , the rooms are very small but ellegant . If I stayed here again I would pay more for a larger room, also you have to pay for WIFI at £19.95 per day I find that a little steep . The service was great, there is a metro station directly behind the hotel so that was handy, they do stick to their allocated check in times however , so if your travelling long distance it may pay to book the previouse day as well.

We liked the hotel. It was clean, friendly, good rooms and a perfect location.
What we could not understand is the fact that their otherwise very good hotel run a substandard breakfast with consequent dry bread, waterish orange juice and youghurt, cheese and ham that is reused from the fridge. This meant that we decided not to use their breakfast even though we had payed for it. Instead we found some good breakfast places around the corner, 100 meter from the hotel.

Room Tip: Rum number 1---is big and nice.

The staff was nice and friendly. The location is great. Free Wi-Fi. But the hotel itself is in horrible condition, especially considering how expensive it was. Check out some pictures I’ve posted.

We had room #5. I guess we should consider ourselves lucky that we had a bathroom in our room. I’ve since read that many of the rooms don’t. #5 is in the basement. We had a nice, large window complete with spider webs all over it and bags of trash just outside.

The smell in the hallway to our room was not nice. It smelled horribly of mold and mildew. We complained about it and a maintenance person showed up fairly quickly to review our complaint with us. He said the carpet had just been cleaned a couple of days ago and the smell was from the cleaning solution they used. What a joke! No, I’m pretty sure I know a moldy basement when I smell one.

I would have been happy paying $100 a night for this place. I’ve stayed in worse. But for the amount of money we paid (avg $260/night), it was a complete rip off!

Breakfast buffet; again don’t waste your money. It was convenient, but there’s not much there for 11 GBP. We ended up going to a Starbucks for way less. Also, the guest book in your room says that you can go to any of three Grange Hotels in the area for breakfast. There’s one right across the street. Try to go there and see what happens. We were told no, go back to your own hotel!! I really hate when employees don’t even know what their company’s policy is.

Very nice location right next to Russel Square, couple of minutes walk from tube stations and British Museum. Courteous staff and neat and tidy hotel. It was highly over priced for the quality of facilities. Read the fine print - a friend of mine who stayed the same dates I was here, ended up with a room with no toilets - shared toilet facilities. Breakfast is expensive and of below average quality. Fruit salad was soggy and stale - when complained I was told that it is made a day earlier to serve in the morning. Overall a neat clean average hotel - will not be first choice for the money I spent here,

We booked directly through the hotel's website and had no mishaps or misunderstandings. If you are booking through a third party, it's always a good idea to call the hotel ahead and make sure all is as you are expecting it. We found the service very good, both at reception and at breakfast. The location is great; literally around the corner from the British Museum and close to two underground stations. Although some of their rooms are completely en-suite, most rooms have only a sink and shower in the room, while the toilet is shared among 3-4 other rooms on the floor. We found the shared facilities very clean, and not at all a problem to use. Overall, great value for $. Would definitely stay here again.
