A real jewel for a posh coffee and cake. Not so pretentious and Fortnums or the Ritz, but nearly as good and a really fun atmosphere. Not cheap but not too expensive to make it prohibitive

The Counter at the Delaunay is modelled on a Viennese coffee house, with an appetising array of cakes and desserts, and very friendly staff. We were there for a quick lunch, rather than dragging out a cup of coffee and a piece of tort, and it delivered at quite a good price. But the food was unremarkable.

We were on a Premium day tour of London that took us to a pub with a very limited menu, so we ditched the group and sought respite at The Counter instead. Having actually travelled onto Vienna a few weeks later, I can say with some authority that the menu was typical Austrian fare. Unfortunately I wasn’t quite in the mood, but the only nearby alternative we saw was a Pret a Manger around the corner, so we ordered and paid up front at the counter.

I had a New York hotdog and my wife got the chicken schnitzel, which I think came on a roll or sandwich. Hardly gourmet, I know. The hotdog was alright, but the schnitzel was a far cry from what you get in Vienna. However, it was perfectly fine and well and truly in quick lunch territory. And with a couple of soft drinks, it only came to 14 pounds ($22). While my wife was gagging to try some of the cakes (yes, plural), unfortunately we didn’t get a chance, as her need for a Facebook update sent us across the road to Starbucks for some free Wi-Fi.

The waitresses were just lovely, and despite the pressure of watching the clock so we could link back up with our tour group, the food was served quite quickly in the busy lunchtime rush. As for atmosphere, it was initially noisy with the crowd, hard surfaces and traffic outside, but we quickly settled into it. It’s perhaps not as calm and relaxing as the coffee house we went to in Vienna, but in retrospect the lack of anyone, or should I say everyone, smoking cigars was just a treat. The staff keep it nice and clean, and the bathrooms set the standard for our following six weeks in Europe that very few places met.

It’s fine for a quick lunch, and would probably be great for a lazy coffee and cake outside the rush.
