So you're around Piccadilly, perhaps shopping and you need a rest... This Japanese shop cum little desserts cafe is really worth a try!

Having lived in London all my life I must have passed here hundreds of times but walked in for the first time last week. A range of Japanese sweets welcomed me and I opted for the Sakura mochi a friend had raved about. He was right, it was delightful. Even better still if you ask to eat your selection(s) at the tables there, you are given green tea to wash it down with!

I can see myself coming a lot more often...

The Sakura Mochi was really nice and also the red bean one. The pudding was ok and I didn't find anything very special.

We had to go back as the japanese pastries were so nice! Like in Japan, slightly sweet, very fine and delicious. Next time we'll try the store in San Francisco!

This little gem of a shop is a great place to explore swanky and tasty old-fashioned Japanese teatime treats with an elegant modern twist. Everybody is clued in on popular bits of Japanese cuisine like sushi or ramen or teppanyaki, etc. But the world of Japanese desserts and teatime sweets is still a bit of a mystery outside of Japan. Minamoto Kitchoan is THE place to explore the hidden world of Japanese goodies!

Minamoto kitchoan serves and sells a lovely variety of 'wagashi' -- traditional Japanese dainties and teacakes and jellies and sweets. A couple of favourites, for starters:

Castella Cake: Similar to pound cake; rich, though much lighter and less buttery than pound cake -- and with a springy texture. Like tempura, this Japanese treat is a product of some cultural exchange with the Portuguese in the 16th century.

Sakuramochi: Sweet azuki bean paste coated in beautifully soft glossy mochi and elegantly wrapped in an edible young sakura cherry leaf.

If you're walking down Piccadilly, stop in and check this place out. Pick out a piece of wagashi and enjoy it with a cup of green tea in-house, or take a box of Castella Cake home with you. Discover a new world or return to a familiar one. Everything is wrapped to perfection, too. Enjoy!
