It's been a couple years since we stayed at the Main house and I'm still not sure how I feel about it.
The location was amazing - great local shops and boutiques, easy access to tube and buses, beautiful architecture and wonderful people.
The price was great. Decor was unique and appreciated. It oozed charm.
The mattress was crap, our towels weren't changed, soap wasn't provided, and we didn't have any privacy. Please note that the top floor is comprised of two rooms which are adjacent and connected by the top of the stairwell and a small bathroom. I asked the owner about privacy and safety and she said that other guests know not to come up the stairs....doesn't really carry much weight in my eyes. We literally got dressed to use the restroom and didn't feel comfortable to relax in the "suite."
Another issue was the cold. Yes, we were there during the winter but why the heck does the heat go off at night? We specifically mentioned the issue to the owner and she had no response, didn't even offer additional blankets. My wife and I shivered through much of the night....extremely frustrating....we live in Chicago and can handle the cold, but we also have adequate heat and blankets.
Maybe we booked with incorrect expectations. Maybe we didn't fully know what we were getting into....but either way, a charming B&B, 5-star hotel, or a good boutique hotel should provide towels, warmth and a decent nights sleep regardless of it's classification. Thats not an excuse.
I should also note that I was actually scolded for shutting the door too hard. Seriously?
