“a real swindle”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 1, 2004

I had to cancel a booking made and PAID FOR 6 months prior to the visit(Oct 2004). I have been trying to get my money back since September but they always argue: they either have not got the proper CC number(of course it has changed since the booking was made), or they need my postal address, or the person in charge is away for 3 weeks, and now the latest trick, they simply refer me to their website for cancellation policy but they CHANGED the terms in the last 2 weeks!!
I do not know, of course, what their place is like but from my experience you can see that their website cannot be trusted.

Yes it is a bit out of the way (in Cricklewood) but that is actually one of the positives of Victorian London. It is in a quiet safe neighborhood. However we were placed in the smallest of rooms and the shared toilet was certainly not expected based on their website information. In reality there is only one room with a private loo.
Always remember to read the fine print I guess. The breakfast is indeed lovely and the caretaker does try to be accomodating. He is actually quite fascinating having been in the Russian army at the time of the break up of the Soviet Union. But the overall experience was shabby.
You can certainly do better for the same price in other parts of London.

We stayed at Victorian London for 4 nights in November -03. The place is quite peculiar: No locks on the doors to the rooms (the owner said that they only had "good people" staying at their "hotel", but it made me feel a bit uncomfortable. Nothing happened, though). You feel like you're staying in someones's home, not at a hotel. The decoration in the house is very victorian. The rooms are filled with curtains, velvet and all kinds of brick-a-brack. And the webpage says "shower in room", and that's what it is, litterally. A shower in the room. The toilet is shared and is in the hall. Victorian London is also a bit too far away from the centre, you'll have to take a bus or walk 15 minutes to get to the tube. We also had to pay extra because we came rather late - we managed to negotiate the price down a bit, though. And the "house-rule" said that if you stained the bedsheet or the towels you would have to replace them - what kind of hotel does that? The owner was also quite nervous about wet clothes or umbrellas - he came knocking on the door, urging us to give our coats and shoes so he could dry them downstairs. The breakfast was good, though. But I think I'll stay another place the next time.
