We visited this hotel for a short overnight break to London. We had booked well in advance but were then advised that the Pub, Bar and Kitchen part of the hotel would be closed for refurbishment between 19th May and 28th August 2019. We decided to continue with our booking as the hotel was only a base to stay overnight and we were offered a basic complimentary breakfast bought to our room.
On arrival we were warmly welcomed and were soon in our room 101. Although the hotel has a Victorian style from the outside building to the inside reception area, the rooms have a modern contemporary feel. The room was fully equipped with everything we needed for our stay. The bathroom had a bath and a separate power shower. Everything in the room is complimentary from the basic tea and coffee to the beers in the fridge bar.
The bed was very comfortable and the room was spacious and very quiet despite the construction work going on outside of our window. I can honestly say that we didn’t hear a thing from the crane and building work below.
The location was good for our stay in a London and a short two minute walk from Aldgate Tube Station and one stop from Liverpool Street Station (National Rail and Tube). We would have no hesitation in staying again especially when all the refurbishment has been completed.

The hotel is undergoing a complete refurbishment so kitchen bar and restaurant are not available so no hot food at the moment.
However the fridge has juice ,milk and yogurt and a bag arrives at 6am with porridge pot ,muffin ,soda bread ,jam ,butter, fresh fruit and breakfast bar so nothing to complain about.
Coffee machine and kettle in the room to make hot drinks.
The refurbished room I stayed in 315 was beautiful ,large for London with big window ,comfortable bed ,double sofa and a small dining table with two chairs ,flat screen tv .
The bathroom has a large walk in shower where I assume a bath once was, and has been beautifully refurbished in cream and white.
There are the usual toiletries but also a vanity kit, a dental kit with brush and toothpaste and a shaving kit with razor and shaving cream.
There was a problem in the room when all the plug sockets fused but it was quickly sorted by a member of staff and the maintenance man ( by phone) .
It was quiet and comfortable and a real gem in the city .
It’s easy to find close to Aldgate tube station and if I need to come to London for a conference again I would definitely stay here.

We have stayed at the chamberlain twice before around 10 years ago and thought it was fabulous and were keen to stay there again overnight while we went to a gig. We knew we should getting a very high quality room rather than risk cheaper alternatives.

Firstly we were aware of the refurbishment and as we were only staying 1 night eating out or getting breakfast wasnt a concern (we were given a continental breakfast bag in the morning) the bed and room was clean and very comfy but there were a number of issues with the bathroom.

1) There was a leak coming from the room above, hopefully not from the toilet!! the ceiling was stained quite badly.

2) When the shower was running it would literally fill the bath up and hardly drain away, you are standing in about 8 inches of water!!

3) Floor tile grout looked very old, brown and mouldy in places and the 'sealant' around the bath panel had been smeared over obviously trying to hide some sort of repair.

4) Carpet on the stairs down to reception was extremely worn! Surely this is a trip hazard but looked very unsightly in such a place.

We did raise the points with reception on th the night of our arrival who said they would look into it... We didn't mention it again in the morning as we were rushing to catch a train. It didn't really affect us that much but I very much doubt we would stay at the chamberlain again which is a shame.

After paying £170.00 for 1 nights stay we would expect to have a better experience!!!
