“Great property, friendly staff, great location”
Reviewed July 15, 2013

Have decided that is area is my new 'go to' area for overnights in London. Very close to Underground and other attractions. Off the path from traditional tourist areas, but still close and trendy enough to feel safe. Staff were kind and helpful and really made the stay great. Rooms comfortable and clean. Had a very smelly shower initially, but once water was running, the smell when away. I suspect it's because it's very near the water. Breakfast was traditional English with eggs, mushrooms, tomato, beans and sausage. The had a vegetarian sausage which was a very nice touch. Would stay again.

On my quick stay at the Novotel London City South a found a professional, clean and generally well run hotel. Having arrived directly from Australia early in the morning the staff did go to extra lengths to check me in a bit earlier.

This hotel is in a great location for transport, some of the key London sites (Tate Modern and Shard a short walk) and the fantastic Borough Markets is just around the corner. There is little traffic in the area, so is fairly quiet.

The room was average size, and fitted out in a modern if not slightly sterile style. Importantly the lighting, air conditioning and rain shower all worked well. I liked the glass wall between the bathroom and main living area which you can make opaque at a flick of a switch.

My room at a sofa which is an additional small bed if needed. No great views to be had from this hotel. The iron was new and the safe was big enough for most lap tops.

I had to pay for internet, but I believe this may be changing in the future. It is free in the main lobby area. Most of the nearby cafes have free WiFi.

The only main negative was the price paid - I arrived on a big sports weekend so accommodation was at a premium.

£580 for a 2 night stay for my son and I,have stayed in cheaper and better hotels in London. Will stick to Guoman hotels in future as they are always good.
Room small, carpet was old and stained looking. Was told I could have a room to overlook the Shard as my son has Autism and loves this building..there was no view of the shard from this room.
The breakfast was of poor quality, the cooked food cheap and tastless.
The kettle in the room leaked and tripped the electrics, reported this, they brought another one,I put water in it,it leaked, had a hole in the bottom.Reported this.XBOX was advertised for use, requested this, told it was faulty, needed work doing to it.The sofa bed that I had to sleep on was uncomfortable, surely a single bed could be available when a twin isn't.No wash hand basin in the toilet. We only stayed 1 night and not 2 as planned. Will stay at Gouman hotels again in future, thought we would have a change, and also get a view of the shard.

Room Tip: Choose Gouman Hotels, they are always good.

Very clean. Spotless. Lobby and room seemed to be very new. Lobby staff was professional and helpful however there might be a line at times. The lobby has Apple computers for guests to use. Clientele appeared to be either families of one or two children, sometimes with grandparents. Business people can be found as well. No groups in their teens, 20's or 30's were seen.

Room was small, but not really an issue. We plan to sleep and clean up in the room and not do much else so it is adequate. We had a large bed and a sofa pull out bed. Once that was open there wasn't much room around the beds. Bathroom was spotless as well as the separate WC. There was both a shower stall and bathtub. Our room was immediately next to the elevators. Not once did I hear the elevator or any people in the halls. I also never heard any doors shut (the doors would not slam shut if you let them) and didn't hear any plumbing from adjacent rooms (maybe they were vacant??). I have never experienced a hotel room so incredibly quiet. However, we did sleep with the window open each night because we liked the cool air. Room was warm yet outside it was no more than 20C. With the window open there is a lot of street noise from sirens to motorcycles to litter trucks to vehicles with excessively loud music. I cannot comment on how well the closed window does with sound. The bed was great. Just the right firmness for us and our teenage daughter slept very well on the sofa bed convertible.

Daily room cleaning was very good. When we saw the cleaning staff they were polite.

The location is about a 10 minute or so walk from the London Bridge tube station which is in the east direction. During the day you will see many people going to their job. Sometimes there are joggers. At night you will see the employed heading home from their job or returning home after meeting with others at a pub. Near the tube it is very busy with traffic, people and small shops and restaurants. There is also the Borough market which is an absolute must stop for anyone walking in this area.

To the north it is a short walk to the Thames and a number of restaurants. Many business people can been seen during the day. Not sure about night.

The Borough tube stop is also about 10 minutes or so walk to the south and east. A bit less business and city than the other two walks, not sure about night. Never felt unsafe walking in any area near the hotel. We also didn't walk in dark alleys. Numerous pubs and restaurants when heading closer to the London Bridge tube station, however not suitable to take out teenage daughter, just not a good fit that way. Many after work young business people frequent these restaurants.

We did not eat at the restaurant in the hotel but we did have a drink and had a meal in the bar area. Service was very good and food was good too. I would eat there again. The atmosphere of the bar area is nothing special, but it was clean.

Only issue was the shower door had a bit of a problem keeping water in. Not sure if water leaked out during or when the door opened. Not a problem for guests other than cleaning up the water after each use. Would not be right to leave it.

I would probably not stay again because the rates were a big part of our hotel budget and need to limit that. We did select this one based on reviews and allowed for it in our budget since we have never been to London and knew that after a long flight and jet lag that we will need something that will ease the journey.

The lobby and breakfast were top notch. The staff was good but out numbered by guests needing help. The location was good - walking distance to London Bridge and the Globe Theater which is a hop-on hop-off stop for several bus companies. However the quad room was small and the air conditioning didn't work, the shower leaked badly and the sink didn't drain well. The room needs to be updated. I mentioned some of the issues to staff but nothing was done. WiFi in the room was really expensive and the free WiFi in the lobby didn't work well. Will look elsewhere next time. Not a good value for the money.
