“Not bad for the price.”
Reviewed April 27, 2014

I booked this hotel last minute, and wasn't sure what to expect given the mixed reviews but it wasn't bad at all. It is currently undergoing renovations and I was put into a newly refurbished room and it was lovely. Nice, neutral decor and the ensuite wet room was gorgeous. I had a fantastic nights sleep thanks to the memory foam mattress, and breakfast was very nice and excellent value). The stairways and corridors haven't been updates yet so are looking rather tired, but overall I would gladly stay here again.

Room Tip: Assuming all the available rooms have been refurbished then I would say that any room would be more...

Stayed for 3 nights in room 39 and was very impressed. Alot of the reviews on here are quite negative, so I wasn't expecting much, but our room was lovely!
The room was very clean, nicely decorated, has lots of natural light, spacious, and with plenty of storage for 2 people. Tea and coffee making facilities, TV with Freeview, and a reading light mounted on the wall each side of the bed.The bathroom is a really good size with a lovely shower, and very clean too.
Bad points- The hotel is still being renovated, so there is some noise in the day, and the wifi didn't work. Also the stairs to the top floor are quite steep, so might be difficult for less mobile guests.
I would definitely stay here again!

Room Tip: Top floor has been renovated although staircase is quite steep.

Pros - the location of this property is great, easy walk to two underground stations and two train stations. The bed was comfortable and the linen was more than acceptable. If you book on line, breakfast is not included and costs 5UKPounds per person. If you book directly with them, breakfast is included. The mattress was good and there was loads of hot water.

Cons - this hotel is being renovated, something that is not noted on the web page. Everything about this hotel is below standard and unless they strip it down completely, it will continue to be a 2 star at best and less on a bad day. The bathroom was made of moulded plastic and I believe it is the same as something you'd find in a boat or camper.

Would we stay there again? My husband would divorce me if I booked us there and his comments was "I'd rather stick pins in my eyes".

As other reviewers have commented, hotel is currently undergoing renovation, which it generally needs in that the structure and decor are somewhat outdated. However, our double ensuite room was acceptable for the price, which included a decent full English breakfast. Please note that the bathroom was a very tight modular unit designed to add a bathroom to one of the London row house rooms). Although there are tube stops nearby they all involve a bit of a walk; busses are more readily accessible and of course it's within walking distances of the British Museum, the theaters and various other things.

This is the second time I've stayed at The George. Hotel was going through a renovation phase and there were materials all over the stairs.
Got a nice room on the first floor, double ensuite, where everything was nice and worked as it should. And got help to move my bags to the room.
Breakfast is OK and the staff is very helpful.
Very conveniently located near two tube stations (Russell Square or Kings Cross).

Room Tip: Higher floors might be quieter but the pressure of the water is diminished.

I stayed there last week as it was near Kings Cross and convenient to my plans the next day. I was also conscious of the firm travel budget and felt this was going to be suitable. Sadly, I was wrong. Yes it's near Kings Cross but that's all. The hotel is ok from the outside but exceptionally tired and old and being renovated ( I wasn't informed of this when booking) in some areas. It really needs an entire facelift inside. My room was down some very steep stairs and when enquiring about using an iron, was told there was one in the breakfast room ( of course!) or I could negate the stairs with iron and board. No offer made to help.... Err this is a hotel chaps! Anyway the iron's lead was covered in tape where the lead had worn through and clearly had never been PAT tested.
Buy a new iron or two - go mad before somebody gets a shock and gets injured.

My room was en- suite of sorts, with a bathroom slightly bigger than a phone box. I had to reprogram the free view TV and you couldn't open the sash windows in case you required fresh air. They do advise of no air conditioning so provide fans in case you need to obtain air of a cool nature.

Breakfast was £5 more but I declined that pleasure and grabbed something on the way to my meeting the next day. The reception was friendly, foreign but polite. Signs all over the hotel and in the room about looking after your valuables, my soap bag did feel as if it was worth more than some of the furniture sadly.

Would I stay again? Not unless it was completely renovated and looked like a hotel worth a £100 a night. Yes, I know it's London but even for that price it's fair to expect something a little better.

Room Tip: Book in another hotel!

I have stayed here before and found it just right for a few nights in London if you are not looking for any luxury of any sort. But this time I am very disappointed. I wasn't expecting very much but I really think the standards have fallen. Granted, it is in the middle of renovation so there is building going on and work materials everywhere. Cartwright Gardens is noisy in the evenings and throughout the night I was disturbed by water gurgling in my washbasin as others used theirs. There was no hot water,. I had to boil the kettle. Breakfast was OK but after reading reviews of helpful staff I found the young women in the breakfast room rather disinterested. They preferred to chat to the workmen from their country who were staying at the hotel and doing the work. My room seemed to have newer furniture but it was already falling apart! I will definitely look for a different hotel next time but will have to pay more. At The George you pay for what you get. Don't expect much
