i asked for a quiet room, what i got was noisy people outside and inside from 12 pm till 4 in the morning. night security did nothing to stop the noise, i asked the man on the desk if he could move me to another room but he said nothing was available, [very unhelpfull]. 4 days of torture. never again.

Room Tip: front single rooms like G13 are very noisy.

Last minute booking for one night (business) due to preferred hotels in area being booked up.

The mattress was painfully thin - you can feel the metal bed frame through it. The duvet was too thin for the temperature of the room. The pillow was too thin and as there was only one, it was an uncomfortable, and cold, night. The carpet was 'crusty' underfoot, and there was (someone else's) hair on the bedding and the floor. Handles were broken on the drawers and wardrobe. There was only one hanger. Paint was peeling from the walls and skirting.

The shower room was disgusting. The toilet hadn't been cleaned in a very long time - the brown marks in the bowl tell you all you need to know about the housekeeping. The shower cubicle had leaked water all over the floor before I even turned it on so that I had to wade through an inch deep puddle before I could reach the WC. The shower head was caked with limescale, the grout was badly stained and the nooks and crannies of the cubicle were full of black gunk. There were discarded toiletry bottle tops and and disposable contact lens packaging in the cubicle too. Although it was supposed to be a bathroom shared with one other room, the other room was unoccupied that night so this was another case of housekeeping not being all it could be.

Advertised communal facilities were unavailable so having arrived near midnight with a microwave meal to heat in the communal kitchen, I was unable to eat…

Had I arrived earlier in the evening, I'd have taken one look and left again. As it was, it was too late to find another room so I stayed. I won't be staying again. I'm not sure why the housekeeping is so poor when at The LSE Rosebery, things were immaculate.

On the plus side, the room was cheap (but that doesn't excuse the dirt) and the breakfast was good.

I didn't complain at the time because I was only going to be in the acccom 6-7 hrs max and didn't think the night porter would be able to do anything about the issues described. I have since contacted LSE Bankside to advise them of these points.

It's functional and, if you're on a tight budget, would suit. But the LSE Rosebery offers significantly cleaner and more comfortable rooms for the same money.

- Remember: These are University Dorms.

- Expect basic rooms with very basic beds (they reminded me of hospital or prison beds) and you won't be disapointed.

- Cheapest room I could find that was fairly central London

- Clean room with private bathroom

- NO MIRRORS! - If you need to do make-up etc, remember to pack a mirror with you!

- Perfect breakfast in the morning with oodles of choice

Bankside House is a great budget choice for London. It's clean, comfortable and convenient (just behind Tate Modern) with helpful staff and serves up a great cooked breakfast. There aren't any double rooms (only twin - but en-suite with tea/coffee making facilities) but if you don't mind that, or the 'student hostel' atmosphere in the common areas, you'll find it compares very favourably to the budget hotels.

Room Tip: Ask for a quieter one at the back/overlooking inner courtyard

I spent 3 nights at BH this month - 3 nights B&B in this tremendous location for only £99, truly hard to beat.

Easy check in, and desk staff always courteous.

Good sized single room, arranged in a triptych with one other bedroom and the bathroom. Everything was well worn but very clean. Good shower pressure but the lavatory required a lot of cranking.

The bed was extremely comfortable, and the duvet cosy. Good amount of hanging and drawer space, though only 2 coat hangers. Plenty of power points. Courtesy kettle, decent size, and a regular supply of coffee, tea and milk.

The only down side was that there was no mirror in the room at all, so it was impossible to see how one looked before setting off. There was a small shaving/make up mirror in the bathroom, too high for me and anyway, no good for checking hemlines in.

The cooked breakfast - 6 items plus unlimited toast and coffee - was excellent: good value and very well cooked. Some of the nicest sausages I've ever had, and the yolks in the fried eggs stayed runny, despite the mass catering.

They happily kept my luggage for me after check in.

On easy bus routes, especially the RV1, which never seems to come up as an option on then TfL website but was a lovely route, right into Covent Garden.

Particularly easy for the Menier Chocolate Factory.

In truth, for a holiday holiday, I might choose something with just a hint more en suite about it but for a bargain weekend, I recommend Bankside unhesitatingly.

I stayed at Bankside three times over the summer and would recommend it to those looking for a low-budget stay in the capital. The location is brilliant, as you are within walking distance of Westminster (30 minutes), and Waterloo (20 minutes). Very close are the restaurants and bars along the Thames which are just lovely on a warm evening. The buffet breakfast at Bankside House is fantastic - you get a choice of 6 items including apples, oranges, bananas, yoghurts, croissants, pain au chocolat, bacon, beans, eggs, hash browns, wedges, sausages and unlimited toast, tea & coffee.

Downsides of Bankside House;
1.The staff- the staff are people that happen to be behind the counter but they are by no means there to assist you or provide customer service. I think the problem is that they have gotten too used to dealing with the young international students that are booked out at Bankside House all summer long and the staff have forgotten that they are dealing with fee-paying customers who are expecting just a touch of courtesy. The management should run a refresher training course for the staff to remind them that they are in the hospitality trade.
2.Cleanliness - the rooms are very basic, which is absolutely fine, but they feel inherently dirty and that they could do with a really thorough deep-clean. The bathrooms are pretty grim and in need of a deep-clean also, although the showers are fantastic - always hot and powerful.
3.Noise - I was woken up by the person in the adjacent room who I was sharing a bathroom with. Their door was so creaky and the walls are paper thin. There's also a lot of noise from the street whichever room you're put in.

Although there is no WIFI, Starbucks is located 2 minutes away and they offer it free all day long...
