Owner description: The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) offers high-frequency links between two of the world's most important financial districts - The City and Docklands - and regeneration areas in east and south east London.

Have used the DLR on and off between Stratford, Shadwell and occasionally to Beckton and some stops in between and it's definitely the most picturesque mode of transport in London, with great views of the Olympic Stadium, Canary Wharf, the O2 and East London in general.

The DLR has an advantage over the tube and buses. The tube is fast and covers the whole London network but underground so you can't see the sights and the buses are great for seeing London but they are slow and not really recommended for long distance.

The DLR is like a ride at the fun fair. A great way to weave in and out of buildings and to see London from a different perspective. I like to try and get a seat at the front of the carriage as they have windows.

I especially enjoy going through Canary Wharf etc... at night and you can see lights through the city.

I don't often ride it but when I do, it's always a pleasant change.

Recommended.

Went on the DLR with a train-mad 10 year old. What a great experience!
.
On a scorching hot August day, we sat and relaxed in the air-conditioned carriage as we whizzed by skyscrapers at mid-level, and looked down at the river, real sci-fi stuff for the child.
.
This was my first trip on DLR, we'll be going again, and again. After return home I looked at the geography of our impromptu trip, and saw that places of real interest to me were only streets away from where we'd alighted (Cutty Sark).
.
Can't wait to find a slot for exploring this wonderful service again, maybe we'll be able to sit in the front as recommended by DavidA.

The DLR is a very important part of London's transport network. The links with the Underground are numerous and extremely helpful for many journeys. The trains are modern and pleasant to travel in and in addition many of the stations have wheelchair access. But over and above its value for travelling around East London, the DLR is a genuinely interesting way to see this part of the capital. Many of the routes, especially those actually in Docklands, are above ground and give wonderful and often unexpected views of the area which is a truly fascinating mixture of the old and the new.

Went on the DLR earlier this month on a visit to London. WOW, mazing as you really go through the heart of The City. Clean and big windows to see everything. It's like a model tube line, but on the outside if that makes any sense. Went from Stratford to Cutty Sark stop and was really a pleasure.
