This is in a converted old riverside building near the river Lea. Food is freshly cooked and reasonably priced. Recommend the French toast with fruit.
Have a walk round the area to get a feel of what this part of London was like pre - Olympics.

Was on our way to Foremans for posh'ish Sunday brunch but they don't open till 12.00 so we went next door to The Counter which is in the Stour Space, a post industrial art gallery....OK, it was the first sunny Sunday for some weeks and the crowds were out so service was a tad stretched...we ordered, after a short but happy queue, 4 bacon bagettes with house sauce and various coffees, we were told it would be 15 minutes, we sat up stairs and admired the view over the canal to the Olympic Stadium...after 10 minutes or so a member of the serving crew taold us there would be another 10 minute delay....we gave them browney points for being up front and honest re timeings....was well worth the wait, superb packed with bacon bagettes, spicy sauce and a good feeling all round...well done all at The Counter

Ok the venue is great and as too is the location. The coffee is great too. This is where it all ends. The queue to order is invariably long, slow and annoying. The person taking the orders is usually slow and when you do finally get there they normally then confirm it's a half hour/45 minute wait. If you dare to ask why they fix you with a hipster stare and say 'because it's the weekend' and you wonder just whom is supposed to be serving who. This has happened pretty much every weekend in the last month and no more. I cannot resist the temptation to put a pinny on, get behind the counter, drum up some energy and enthusiasm and if I am really ambitious some friendliness and just get with the program. Even if somewhere is full, it shouldn't mean a long wait but when it's half empty? That's just embarrassing. Total style over substance and if this is your style then you must enjoy doleful service that you should apparently be grateful for. Truly dreadful and it's a shame, it could be SO excellent. Who wants to wait 45 minutes for some beans? Nobody. Oh, and where is the brown sauce? What's the shame in brown sauce?

Get some spring in your step and some enthusiastic staff instead of lifestyle servers.

Don't go if you are hungry! I've been for the brunch at the Counter quite a few times (I live in the neighbourhood), and each time the food has been ages coming. The staff could not possibly care less than they do (except the guy working the kitchen, alone - he is a hero and the food he makes is tasty).

The view isn't so great now that the wall around the Olympic Park has gone up, prices are high and you can wait an hour or have them forget your order (this has happened to me twice, although there was an apology brownie offered the second time).

Try one of the other places on Roach Road, or you can get the same food at the Pavillion Cafe in Victoria Park where the staff care just that tiny bit more...

The Wick is where it's at. Where else in London can you walk through a graffiti filled industrial site to find a gallery, cafe and bar on the river opposite the Olympic park that serves awesome food? It's almost a crime to review it, as us locals in Hackney Wick like to keep our community charms under wraps and away from the tourists... So here's hoping that readers of this are fellow neighbours only ;)

The Counter Cafe is always busy, and on sunny days its always packed with punters wanting to be alongside the bustling Lee Navigation. The food and specifically breakfast is superb, and location is second to none.

The only downside is that there are often too many kids here at the weekend. Brats and coffee just don't mix well!
