“Good place in central London.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 19, 2012

This hotel is one of several run by the same company and in the same street. It is not a big hotel which for some will be good. The location is excellent, only a five minute walk from two tube stations, Russell Square and Holborn. The west end is also easily walkable.

The room I had was spacious and clean with a huge and comfortable bed. The only down side was that the armchairs were not conducive to sitting and reading a book or watching the TV. I was on business and stayed for three nights so I need a little bit of comfort for sitting around. On the plus side the room was fitted with a kitchen sink, fridge and microwave, also on hand were proper plates and cutlery. Really handy, if like me you get fed up eating out all the time. Because of the location there are several supermarkets within five to ten minutes walk where you can buy ready meals for the microwave.

One other down side could be the walk of fifty yards along the street to get breakfast in one of the other hotels. This was not a problem for me, the weather was cold but dry. If it had been raining heavily I might have thought otherwise. But, the walk was worth it, breakfast was very good with food freshly prepared and a good choice on the continental buffet. All in all a good hotel, I have booked to go back again in January.

A block away from Russel Square Tube stop, which is directly on the central line that runs from Heathrow Airport. It's on a quiet street about a block away from the British Museum and cafes (including a starbucks). Our Room was on the bottom floor. I was surprised at how spacious the room was! Very clean and big comfy bed. Clean and spacious bathroom. The tub is really high up so you really gotta get your leg up to get in it. Might be a bit of a problem for some with mobility problems. Overall a great hotel with friendly staff! Highly reccommend!!

Pluses: Good location near British Museum, pubs, shops, and the Tube. Wide comfortable bed, window onto lovely garden, quiet, generally courteous service, very clean, good buffet breakfast, window curtains thick and wide to block all light for sleeping. Minuses: Tub/shower faucets hard to use, desk chair cushion too low and squishy to write comfortably at desk, breakfast extra except on weekends (I had to leave so early Sunday for airport that I couldn't make the free breakfast, so I asked to have my Friday breakfast free instead, denied).

Room Tip: Prefer room 1 and 2 (no elevator).

One of my favourite hotels in London. I travel regularly for work and look to book this hotel every time and even plan to stay the weekend with my wife just before Christmas.

Located off the main streets at Holborn it offers a quiet location with efficient and friendly staff. Rooms can vary in size but are of excellent quality and nice bathroom facilities. Nice decor and peace and quiet at night.

Perfect for the business traveller or couple - not sure about families, you'd need to make sure the rooms are big enough.

5minutes walk from Holborn Tube, and 10mins from Covenant Garden and down into Leicester Square.

Room Tip: If you cant get booked into The Portland, there are other hotels of the same chaing (Grange) on the...

We had noticed the hotels on Bedford Place on previous visits to London and were impressed by how handy they were for Russell Square Tube, The British Museum and Covent Garden area. The majority of the hotels are owned by Grange Hotels. Ours was a clean, very spacious and well furnished room on the third floor. Hotel facilities were good with very helpful reception staff. The only slight quibble was the standard continental breakfast with quite a high charge for an cooked breakfast. However there are excellent local cafe's within 10 minutes walk which provided very good value for money. We will certainly try and use this hotel or one in the same group when we visit London next year.

excellent very large room with mini kitchen,. reception staff friendly and helpfull, evening meal £20 but breakfast £25 per person a bit too expensive. the gardens at the end of the road have an excellent cafe open from 7am that do a very good breakfast at a much more sensible price

I always like to add something new to the reviews for hotels but the Portland seems to have all bases covered in previous reviews.

So in essence....

Pro's - Big bedroom (room 101), large comfy bed, very airy, very quiet, nice clean bathroom and a good sleep was had after a 4 mile night walk to settle down.

Cons - I asked for an iron and ironing board and had to chase it down an hour later, breakfast is in the next door building which is nice if its sunny but there is the potential for getting wet in a downpour as there are no interconnecting doors to the building. I cannot believe in this day and age that hotels still charge for wifi. £10.00 for 24 hour access.

The staff were friendly, the breakfast was plentiful and well presented and all in all a pleasant stay was had. I would return...if wifi was free!!!!

Room Tip: I was in room 101, it was large and spacious and the bed was large and comfy.
