“December in London”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 27, 2012

I stayed at the Marriott London Park Lane with my daughter and my five year old granddaughter We were warmly greeted upon arrival by Katrin who had a little teddy bear ready for gd. They had the room ready for early arrival (we were exhausted from the flight) and had a perfect size rollaway bed ready for gd. The room was ample sized and very clean. I found that as a Marriott rewards member I could get in room wireless at a reduced rate. Everyone in the hotel and the restaurant was extremely friendly. The food in the restaurant was very good and they made gd feel very special every time we ate there. I particularly recommend their desert of Sticky Toffee Pudding. There was a beautiful heated pool in the basement of the hotel with noodles and kickboards available. The location of the hotel was very convenient - right by the Marble Arch Tube stop and across from Hyde Park. They did everything possible to make it a memorable trip for us.

My husband and I stayed here for three nights last week. The hotel is located in a good location close to shopping, dining and the park. The concierge lounge is nice and the food is really good. The hotel was clean and the bed was very comfy. Our room was close to the front of the hotel and it was a little noisey but overall I would stay here again.

We arrived at the hotel at around 11.30 am and were told our room wasn't ready. This was of course fine as it was too early to check in anyway. We were greeted by a friendly trainee and he showed us to the executive lounge and said he would come and find us when our room was ready. We had a drink in the lounge and then decided to go through to the restaurant for lunch - which was excellent. By around 1pm our room still wasn't ready (again not a problem as it was still early) so we decided to head out for the afternoon. After a hectic afternoon of sightseeing, we arrived back to the hotel thoroughly exhausted with a very worn out and hungry 3 year old and 2 older children. Our plan was to head to our room, order some room service and settle our little one down for the night. However, when we went to check in, we were informed the previous occupant of our room had not yet checked out. We were offered 2 rooms next to each other to wait in. I explained that this was unacceptable as our youngest needed to be settled for the night and we didn't want to have to move rooms later on. I asked for a suite or interconnecting rooms. We were told the hotel was fully booked and all that was available was 2 seperate rooms. As we were on a pre Xmas family break, this was unacceptable to us as we wanted to be together. I asked to be transferred to the JW Marriott (Grosvenor Square) as we have stayed there before and it was exceptional. We were kept waiting for quite a while whilst they tried to sort something out for us (they did offer the use of the exec lounge, but we had a very tired 3 year old and just wanted to get to our room) The JW was fully booked so we were told they could offer us interconnecting rooms at County Hall Marriott. They offered to honour the rate we were paying there for the night as County Hall was more expensive. We were frustrated as we had just come in a taxi from the South bank and it meant another taxi ride with our rapidly declining little one. We agreed though as we were eager to get settled as we had wasted a bit of time getting it all rectified. As we were only in London for the night, I didn't want to waste any more time. The hotel paid for our taxi to County Hall and gave us complimentary breakfast, plus a discount voucher for another stay (which I found a little presumptuous as it couldn't be used that stay, and must be used for 2 consecutive nights!) I have to be fair to the staff though, they were extremely apologetic and professional and offered us a fair solution to the issue at hand. The manager seemed genuinely concerned about the situation and the disruption it had caused us, and to be fair, we recognise that it was out of her control. We were a bit frustrated at being further from Hyde Park, as we had booked the hotel for its location as we planned on visiting Winter Wonderland the next morning. The concierge was very kind though and offered to look after our bags the next morning to save us taking them with us and also offered us use of the exec lounge for drinks etc. We were impressed with his level of service and how accomodating he tried to be. We like Marriott for their service, and we still feel that way, even though we were frustrated at the time. It all turned out well in the end as we had a thoroughly enjoyable stay at County Hall.

It’s all been said before.

Good rooms – good size for London
Excellent staff
Excellent location
Comfy beds
Superb pool

The only minus is that the hotel is a little generic; it has nothing unique. But apart from that, it’s absolutely fine.

We stayed at this hotel for a long weekend from Friday to Monday. It was the first time we stayed at this Marriott though we have stayed at others in London and other European capital cities. The location is ideal, right on the corner of Park Lane and Oxford Street and only a few steps to the Marble Arch Underground Station.

The high point of our stay were the staff who, without exception, were pleasant, efficient and went out of their way to look after us. I won't go into detail but I could give you a whole list of actions which, for me, were exceptional rather than the norm for this type of hotel.

Breakfast was probably average rather than outstanding but an excellent choice and what you would expect from any hotel of this rating. We ate in the restaurant on two evenings and the food and service were top notch. The Executive Lounge is at the back of the hotel on the ground floor and does not have any natural light. However, it was a pleasant place to relax and have a drink or snack. There was a good variety of hot and cold food in the evening - not enough to make a full meal but certainly a substantial "starter" before going on to a restaurant.

Others have mentioned unruly children at the hotel. We saw only two or three children during our stay who were perfectly behaved. The hotel does have a notice saying the children are not admitted to the Executive Lounge after 7pm.

We used the hotel pool on two mornings before breakfast. It is in the basement but one of the nicest city hotel pools we have been in.

Our room was on the 5th floor at the front of the hotel overlooking Marble Arch. We experienced no traffic noise other than the occasional emergency vehicle siren and, otherwise, the room was well sound insulated.

Unlike many of the UK Marriott Hotels which are part of a chain in, (what should I say?) "financial difficulties", this one is independently owned and managed and it shows. We were very pleased with our visit and it will certainly be our first choice for London visits in future.

On another point, we actually drove up from Hampshire and parked in the Park Lane car park which is almost opposite the hotel. The costs was no more than parking at a rail station and buying two expensive return rail tickets an it was certainly a lot easier and, actually, quicker!. The car park had plenty of space and you can pre-book online.

Room Tip: The front of the hotel rooms are fine and quiet if you go for a higher floor.

Literally 2 minutes walk from Oxford Street, right in the heart of London. Hyde Park Winter Wonderland was at our doorstep. Staff were extremely helpful and I found the attention to top level services great. A warm welcome from the doorman (who remembered our names the entire trip) - nothing was too much trouble. Executive Lounge was good, although we chose to have breakfast in the main restaurant - it was fine - usual buffet supported by a good al la carte menu. We are lucky enough to have Elite status at the Marriott, and this hotel certainly went all out to ensure your rewards status was recognised. The bed was huge and extremely comfortable - great after a long day out and about.
This hotel, staff and services met and at times exceeded our expectations.
