Please dont confuse New Covent Garden fruit, veg, flower and plant market (SW8) with the tourist haunt of Covent Garden (WC2E).
New Covent Garden Market is a wholesale market for fresh produce and flowers which supplies many of the large hotels, restaurants and companies in London and the surrounding area.
I find the fruit and veg section a bit intimidating but I love the flower market. People always ask me if you can buy just one bunch of flowers which you can. Remember that the prices you will be quoted will be net of VAT. Some stalls only take cash but many nowadays take credit cards. The sight of rows and rows of flowers from every corner of the globe is simply an amazing spectacle. Well worth a visit.
You also dont need to get up in the middle of the night to visit either as during the week the stalls stay open during the morning. Saturdays are always quieter and stalls start closing around 10am in my experience.
Visit C Best for wonderful vases, continers, ribbons and every sort of floral accessory you can imagine. Especially good for Christmas decorations.
If you drive the entrance fee is £5 but you can walk into the flower market free of charge. The entrance is close to Vauxhall train, bus and underground.
If you are interested in flowers this is a must.

Unfortunately there are two Covent Gardens in London - The New Covent Garden market listed at Nine Elms (south of the river) is a WHOLESALE fruit, veg, flower and food market open from 3am whereas the pictures shown and all the references to shopping/eating/listening to music/pie shops etc are for a RETAIL area called Covent Garden in central London off Drury Lane and home to the Royal Opera.

I recommend the former if you are arestauranter or florist and the latter if you are a tourist.

Assuming you are a tourist, I would suggest you enjoy Covent Garden arcaded walk, visit the transport museum and Opera shop and be prepared for some very nice but pricy coffee and cake experiences. The indoor market is OK, the little shops under canopies touristy BUT follow directions on the underground and get off at Leicester Square, Charing Cross, Embankment or Holborn stations as Covent Garden station can be hellish.

There are handful of shops and restaurants available. While we were there, there were some performances going on. A lively, cultural & retail district.

Can't really rate the market as a tourist because there were only a handful of vendors working on a Saturday in late July. It would have been a totally wasted trip, but the flower market nearby was working and that was worth seeing. Especially if you want to take pictures.
