Owner description: Although there have been various earlier entertainment buildings on the site the reconstructed Adelphi Theatre, with its art deco interiors, opened to the public in December 1930 with Jessie Matthews starring in Ever Green. The front-of-house areas of the Adelphi Theatre were restored to their original lustre and extravagance in 1993 when Andrew Lloyd Webber became co-owner and opened his musical production of Sunset Boulevard. Other famous productions at the Adelphi Theatre include Gertrude Lawrence in Cole Porter’s Nymph Errant, Ivor Novello’s The Dancing Years, Bless The Bride, Beatrice Lillie as Auntie Mame, Van Johnson in The Music Man, Lionel Bart’s Blitz! and Maggie May, Charlie Girl with Anna Neagle, a revival of Me and My Girl originally starring Robert Lindsay and Emma Thompson and in the Adelphi Theatre’s longest run (over nine years), the new Broadway production of Kander and Ebb’s Chicago. Revivals of Evita and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat have proved enormously popular. More recently, the theatre played host to the worldwide premiere of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Love Never Dies.

Show was brilliant. Michael Ball was unrecognisable, until he sang! Imelda Staunton was amazing too. The show was dark and funny at the same time. Would highly recomend it.

A thoroughly excellent production - Michael Ball is unrecognisable and Imelda Staunton a gem but despite premium stalls seats (row G) I spent the evening dodging the head of the man in front of me. The seats are only slightly raked and at this point directly behind each other. Fortunately a lot of the show takes place at a high level but in you're in back stalls I think this would be a problem. Old theatres always have seating issues but at £95 per ticket be warned.

Excellent show, the cast were fantastic. We booked best seats in the dress circle but there was very little room for longer legs, we had to sit with our legs jammed in sideways which did take the shine of the evening.

“Excellent!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 7, 2012

We just had a fantastic time at the Adelphi to see 'Sweeney Todd'. The theatre has been beatifully restored to it's 1930s Art Deco splendour. Despite having seats In the back row of the Upper Circle, the seats were roomy and comfortable with excellent views of the stage. The kiosks and public areas were wonderful and staff were excellent and very friendly. Highly recommended!!!
