“Tiny rooms, very squashed”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 25, 2013

I had a really tiny room and the shoe hotel had a dolls house feel about it. Tatty and staff not particularly attentive. Did not eat at the hotel just a place to sleep then get up and go. Beware the hotels chosen taxi firm. I took a black cab to get to the hotel and the hotels chosen supplier cost more than double the black cab for the same journey in the opposite direction which felt like a bit of a rip off. Ok overall but would not stay there again, there are better hotels in this price range and not as good as my other experiences of the Mercure brand.

Room Tip: Specify that you don't want a room the size of an airing cupboard!

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to post your review.

I was surprised to read your comments regarding our staff as most of our guests praise for the hospitality and attention we give to our guests.

Our rooms vary in size from small doubles to king executive. Some of them can be on the small side, however this is a common issue with London hotels. We are looking at ways to improve the usage of space in the small rooms in order to improve guest comfort.

I hope you will not judge solely on this experience and will be inclined to try us again in the future.

Kindest regards,

Georgiana Pusnava

The Mercure London Kensington is ideally located just outside central London: 5 to 10 minutes walk from the High Street, Kensington and Kensington Gardens; 5 minutes walk from the Natural History Museum and the V & A Museum; 10 to 15 minutes walk from Harrods; and only 5 minutes walk from the Earls Court, Kensington and Gloucester tube stations. It is also only 5 minutes walk from Gloucester Street, where you can catch on of the three hop on/Hop off bus companies that provide a great overview of the main London attractions.

The hotel is relatively small in a fairly old building with only a few floors, but with typical English charm. Adjacent to the front desk is a small lounge/bar area where drinks and food can be purchased and consumed in a relaxed atmosphere. The staff in this area, and in the breakfast room were extremely friendly and helpful.

Rooms were small, but we didn't spend a lot of time in our room as it was our first time in London, and if we wanted room to relax we could go down to the lounge/bar area on the ground floor. Though small, the rooms were clean and tidy, and the bathroom was adequate size.

The hotel provided free wireless internet in the rooms and in the common areas and changed the password every day. The free wireless internet was common to almost all hotels in Europe this trip.

We paid what I thought was an excellent rate through our Advantage Plus membership and significant advance booking (2 to 3 months). I had been told that accommodation was extremely expensive in London but we paid nightly rates similar (in A$) to what we would expect to pay in any Australian capital city.

It was our first time in London, but if I were to return I would definitely stay there again. It had a real homely feel.

Hard to beat the Mercure, the rooms are small but well presented.

The receptionists were some of the best I've had to deal with for a long time. Raquel was especially helpful in meeting my needs, and always with a smile!

We stayed in this hotel last year, good location, close to local transport, close to restaurant and supermarket. good value for money. rooms are small, lift is small. Do not stay in this hotel if you like cold room. The bar downstairs opposite to reception is also small.

We booked a small double but were upgraded to a king room which was very comfortable. The bed was excellent, the sound proofing and the blackout curtains very good as room overlooked the Cromwell Road. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are obviously quieter but the soundproofing and dark curtains very good for sleep.

This is a standard mercury hotel in a great location near museums, Harrods etc. good base for sightseeing. Lots of restaurants etc nearby. Near earls court or Gloucester rd tube. Had a small double whic was very small. The layout wasn't great- having I shuffle around bed. Tea and coffee, tv etc if you can find a plug . Bathroom was clean and modern. Bed was really comfy with crisp sheets. All in all a good base to stay if you are. Looking for somewhere to rest after a day sightseeing. Staff were friendy and menu looked reasonable but I didn't eat in the hotel.

The location of the Mercure Kensington is a quick 5-minute walk to Earl Court Underground Station, and within easy walking distance of The Natural History Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. We were warned through Trip Advisor of the room size, so upon check-in we asked about that, and the clerk assured us we would be more comfortable in an upgraded room with a King-Size bed. She was right. We've been in London postage-stamp rooms before, with barely enough room for the luggage. Breakfasts were very good. The staff was friendly. And when I had a last-minute snafu with my passport, they bent over backwards to be helpful. The whole event left it quite hit-or-miss whether I'd make my flight in time, and the front desk clerk handed me a few magazines for the reading, just in case I ended up spending the day sitting at the airport. I thought that was very thoughtful!
