Neighborhood: Chelsea
Description: Established in 1863, The Markham Inn became a place where explorers and travelers, such as Sir Clements Robert Markham, Secretary of The Royal Geographic Society, would congregate to exchange stories and make plans. Chelsea’s less intrepid visitors won’t need a compass to find their way – The Markham is centrally located on Chelsea Green. The Markham offers an all-day, European menu with a special focus on lovingly prepared, seasonal and British sourced food.

This is a great little place, filled with trendy young people drinking fresh orange juice having their friendly catch ups, or just sitting with the weekend papers and enjoying their eggs. The menu is perfect for brunch! The portions are generous and good value for money. I would suggest this place for lunch and dinner too and is buzzy throughout the day. The steak sandwich was more than genrous, as was the club sandwich. Cozy and fun you willl want to while away your free time here.

The manager was happy to accomodate any request (air conditioning to be turned down... it is winter almost now afterall.... no need to freeze inside and out).

Great hot chocolate- recommend you ask for a cup though as bit hard to drink something hot out of glass with no handle.

We were staying just around the corner and, jet lagged, were desperate for breakfast early on a Saturday morning. A little Googling, and we found that the Markham Inn opens at 9 am. Since it was also close (it was raining - so London) we ducked in. The interior is lovely, dark red walls with pictures hanging everywhere. We got a large booth to ourselves, as there was no one there. Very comfy. The waiter was incredibly friendly and the service was prompt but again, no one there, so I've no way to say what it would be like during the rush. We had a superb Full English breakfast, made with really top quality ingredients. The black pudding was fantastic and the bread (brown in England, whole wheat in the U.S.) was really more of a 7 grain, full of lovely bits of different things. If the breakfast was any indication, I'd love to go back for lunch or dinner. The only drawback was the price. For 2 people, with tip, it came to almost $60 US ! If that price was any indication, I'm afraid to go back for lunch or dinner. Now, granted, this is an expensive neighborhood, but really...

The Markham Inn is a without doubt new local favourite for me. Excellent food - the lamb was superb, and the chocolate fondant is among London's best. Exceptionally friendly service on all counts, and a great atmosphere, with much excitement sweeping through the room on this particular evening when the a mixture of staff and diners gathered round a laptop to watch Usain Bolt achieve his second double Olympics victory. A great local restaurant.

We went to the Markham Inn because my companion remembered it as having decent pub food. It is now decked out as a smart restaurant with prices to match. On arrival we were served with some slices of bread, which were stale. We ordered our food, and margaritas as an aperitif. After some time we wondered if the waitress had forgotten the order for aperitifs and so when our food came we started anyway. The margaritas turned up a while later, so we sent them away, having started on our wine. The cheapest bottle is nearly £20, and most are much more expensive than that. The wine was passable but wouldn't have cost more than £5 at a supermarket. As for the food, I had veal escalope, which had no taste at all beyond a certain sourness which derived from a few entirely irrelevant slices of grapefruit. My veal was accompanied by a small salad, of which the tomatoes were the most exciting taste experience of the entire meal. My companion had the seared tuna, which he said was acceptable without being spectacular. It did at least taste of fish. The service was very assiduous, with unnecessary waiters pouring out our water and wine for us, but in the absence of enjoyable food, this seemed an empty courtesy. On leaving, we complained about the non-arrival of the aperitifs, but were told that there was only one person at the bar and margaritas took time to prepare. This is nonsense- when we ordered there was hardly anyone else in the restaurant and it really doesn't take as long to make a margarita as to make a cup of tea. This restaurant is all style and no substance. As the evening drew on,it filled up with young people all smartly dressed and excitable. The Markham clearly caters for those who want a fashionable look but care little for good food.
