“The flavors are subtle, but a nice experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 29, 2012

Overall I would say that if you’re hanging out at Camden Market, then you should go and check it out. It’s a fun experience, for sure, and the ice cream is pretty good. The toppings are amazing and really add a nice touch, as many of them are very unusual. In fact, one of the main things about Chin Chin is that you’ll get to sample flavors that you normally don’t see in a lot of places
.
I had pondicherry vanilla with caramel toppings, which was very good. The combo was perfect, and the caramel was excellent. My g/f had the same vanilla with hazelnut. My mom had the Mexican watermelon fizz which was by far the most delicious. I have not tasted a watermelon like that before, and if it’s on offer when you go, I’d strongly suggest trying it.

Of course, how the ice cream is made is what gets attention, and it’s rather interesting with the nitrogen and such. One thing you can be assured of, is that your ice cream will be fresh. If you’ve never had fresh ice cream before it might taste a bit strange, maybe not as strong a flavor as you’d like (lacking that ‘chemical punch’, lol). Keep tasting though, and your tongue and palate will start to get the point!

In closing, even after separating the process from the product (meaning not being swayed by the bells and whistles of all the nitrogen clouds and such), I think the end product is pretty good. It may not be the second coming that some claim it to be, but it’s worth a trip, for sure. Will I go again the next time I’m in Camden Market? You better believe I will. It was fun, if nothing else!

Hope this helps

“A bit too show-y, but essentially good products”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 17, 2012 via mobile

Delicious valrhona chocolate ice cream. The caramel sauce, however, was burnt. The interior looked cool, yet not over the top. I was a bit annoyed by the shopkeepers narrating every step of the making process - which is a basic middle school science project - but I guess other people like that sort of thing. I will visit again, but I admit I was a little bit disappointed, having hyped this place up in my mind. Nevertheless, it's a good place.

“Worth the wait”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 16, 2012

This place is fun, innovative with great tasting ice cream.

You may need to queue for up to 15-20mins but it is worth the wait. This place is a tiny little "lab" on the corner of the lock by Shaka Zulu/Gilgamesh. They have 4 flavours (two rotating and the usual vanilla and chocolate). There are a choice of toppings and sauces. I went for the vanilla ice cream with honeycomb and caramel sauce. Everyone gets to experience the owners mix up the cream and then freeze it right in front of your eyes using liquid nitrogen.

The result is a brilliant smooth fresh ice cream. It tasted great, was lots of fun and at only £4 a tub, great value.

Don't miss out, go here!

“Interesting idea, good location, lack of flavour”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 5, 2012

I love ice creams and try to go to the best places to eat them, whether it be Gino Gelato WC2N 4HZ, at the East end of St Martins in the Fields, Trafalgar Sq, or Marine Ices NW3 2BL, or Gelato Mio W11 4UE. the choice has improved so much over 10 years!

This little business uses liquid nitrogen to freeze ice cream while you watch, (Heston Blumenthal, and Ferran Adria have made this popular in catering, and its amazing to watch . Texture was perfect, but sadly that taste was lacking, I had caramel, my partner had vanila. Both were flavourless. Toppings were delicious, the caramel flavour had, I was told been obtained from stout beer to get a caramel taste, I could not taste the caramel at all.

Lovely idea, need to improve on the flavours alot.

Marine Ices down the road dont have anything to worry about.

“Amazing ice cream and made with style!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 3, 2012

This is an amazing place for an ice cream. The service is great and they talk you through what they're doing and inform you of what the ice cream is made from. They have very good quality ingredients and there's the obvious theatre whilst they freeze your ice cream with liquid nitrogen. Fantastic!
