“Pleased its my local.”
Reviewed March 2, 2013

Luckily I am a local and therefore pop in to eat here on a regular basis and have done for many years and am never disappointed. The atmosphere takes me back to Greece on the 70's and feels like home from home. Zen and his staff are welcoming and laid back which often means that service is slow but also means you are never hurried out of here because they have a second sitting. The menu is very small and he does what he does extremely well. His taramasalata and Halloumi are the best I have tasted, the slow cooked dishes excellent and he knows how to cook fish to perfection. The very generous Greek salad has good quality Feta cheese which one doesn't often find in Greek restaurants. Zen also uses good quality olive oil which adds great flavour to the salad and many of the starters. If you are looking for anything fancy then this is not for you but if you want to relax, have great food in a relaxed atmosphere then this will feel like a find.

“Was this Notting Hill 30 years ago ? So good, it will end up banned !!”
Reviewed February 20, 2013

Without prompting a debate about rising property values in Kensal Rise ( ! ), I do wonder if this is a time warp straight from The Rachel Papers ?

Basic proposition - Zen seems to be serving good quality Greek comfort food from his front room. Stuff is fresh, menu limited and it tastes great and the portions are generous. From the outside, it seems he's just thrown an old curtain across the whole facade and built a barricade of debris on the inside. The "decor" seems to be an ad hoc combo of stickers and old prints on smoke stained long since undecorated walls, the clientele discriminatingly eclectic. His sons noisily play electronic games at front of house.

Be aware, contrary to what I had been told, they do serve wine. They don't take credit cards, its down to the folding stuff, and the desert menu is limited - Zen : "its my wife's trifle".....but the lady makes a great trifle.

We all strive for genuine restaurant recommendations from friends exploring the ethnically absorbing corners of London - and this is one of the few. I fear for Zen that a Brussels bureaucrat in a day-glo jacket will one day stride in, demand to see the paperwork and insist they build an aluminum gantry through the middle.....enjoy Tsiakkos until then. Excellent.

“Every part of it is unique and wonderful!”
Reviewed August 21, 2012

Feeling blessed to live around the corner of this place. A real hole in the wall that you can't see if you don't know it's there. It always looks shut but take the step and open the door, a whole new world of Cypriot and Greek tastes will open up. Decoration is unique on its own way, rustic but that's part of the character of this place. You will be amazed by how friendly people are there, both staff and customers as they all know where they are (someone sent them for a reason!). Try kleftiko and grilled haloumi. Well, try as much as you can, I personally loved every dish.

“My favourite Greek restaurant in London”
Reviewed July 4, 2012

This restaurant is totally unique and oozes personality. It's informal, the food is super simple, fresh, tasty and locally sourced (not supermarket) ingredients, flexible for vegetarian/vegans - Xen, the ever friendly and thoughtful owner and his lovely young local staff are ALWAYS welcoming and a lot of fun to be with. Top that with lovely food and you have a winner. Great to go to on your own as well as with someone or with a group because it's so friendly..I have always felt welcome here and Maida Vale/Harrow Road just wouldn't be half as brilliant without it's presence.
This little gem is utterly charming, has reasonable prices (especially for take away) and a laid back charm you don't find very often in often 'closed' inner London communities. Definitely check it out. Best leave a stuffy attitude outside, as this place has the opposite feel, which is one of the things that makes it so special :-)
