We had been past Mien Tay many times and it had always seemed very busy, which is usually a good sign. We called in for an impromptu early evening meal on Christmas Eve, with our two children.

The service was fast and eficient, and the food was very tasty, especially the chicken curry, served in a clay pot. There was plenty of choice on the menu, to suit all tastes and at around £60 for the four of us (the two children shared a dish and I only had a couple of beers) it was pretty good value too.

Definitely worth another visit.

Visiting and staying with my two children in London, I thought a lunch which would suit a vegetarian and a meat eater would be a nice treat. Both had previously dined at Mien Tay and enjoyed the experience, so we made our way there from nearby Wandsworth Common on a wet Monday lunch time. As we suspected on a wet Monday, we would not have a problem getting a table without booking. The dining area was half full, with some local business people and casual off the street diners like ourselves.
We were given a nice table near the entrance and given a warm welcome by the lady in charge, ( she was very helpful with the menu ). The menu was not extensive, but had ample choices for our individual tastes; illustrated with pictures of Vietnamise dishes. There was a £5.50 menu plus soup of the day, included in the price.
However, we chose from the main menu; noodle soup with beef, chicken curry with rice, pork balls with rice, goat galangal with rice and stir fried rice noodles with mixed vegetables ( for the vegetarian ) plus several pots of tea. We were not disappointed, each dish was excellent and beautifully served without any delay.
The total cost was less than £60 ( no service charge ) and it`s reputation for good value and excellent food is correct. Please note; bills must be paid in CASH, no cards.

If in central London you can get a bus from Trafalgar square (87) this will take you to Lavender Hill this will take approximatley 40 min but well worth the trip! Or you can can the train to Clapham Junction (5 min). We had reservation for a Thursday night and glad we did cause people where queing when we arrived to get in. Not a plush restaurant but it all about good quality food. We had quail and soft shell crab for starters both high recommended and for the main I had goat Galangal and my partner had Beef Pho again both highly recommended we had a bottle of wine and it cost £45.00 with a tip. Try sugar cane bar across the road for cocktails before or after.

We visited Mien Tay (Battersea/Clapham) on Saturday night and it was overall a good experience. It looks pretty scruffy from the outside, with chairs and boxes cluttering the lobby area, but the seating upstairs looked nice. Unfortunately this was full (we had booked) and so were led downstairs into a kind of basement area that was sadly devoid of character and were seated next to the cabinet with glasses/napkins etc. so had waiters constantly pushing past my chair to get them - not fantastic. But the redemption of this place is the food - I'd seen some critics reviews praising certain dishes - we tried them and weren't disappointed - the Mien Tay spring rolls, and squid in salt, pepper and garlic (YUM) and then a big hot bowl of beef Pho and a whole sea bream with mango as our mains. All really lovely, especially the fish which was really unusual and delicious! I'd recommend sticking to the traditional/house special/Vietnamese dishes and not ordering Chinese-takeaway-style options which were also on the menu as these didn't look nearly as good.
