I had wanted to go down to Billingsgate market for years so a friend from work who regulary went down there said he'd take me.
We went on a Saturday morning, got to Billingsgate at 5am when the market opens to the public. Parking was a bit frantic, it was packed with all sorts of people trying to manouver and park in the cramped car park. If you dont mind a short walk you can always park in the mcdonalds car park just as you come off the A13 by the roundabout.
Once inside its just as manic, people suround the stalls all looking for bargains, you've got ot keep your eyes and ears open for the porters wheeling large pallets of fish around as they wont hesitate to clip your ankles as they go round!
Theres hundreds of fish to choose from, a much more varied selection than you would ever get in a supermarket and the value is so much better. I bought a whole side of salmon for £12, and managed to cut it up into 10 decent sized fillets when i got home. You do need to know whats in season though as obviously the fish has just literally come straight off the boats.
I've now become a regular visiter to Billingsgate, at least once a month i go down there and stock up, i wouldnt buy fish from anywhere else.
If your keen to buy fresh sustainable fish and aren't afraid to get up early then Billingsgate is the place for you!
