“Refurbished, modern and convenient”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 9, 2013

Positives:
Stayed 2nd/3rd March 2013 – only paid £49/£52 per night for 2 people in modern recently refurbished en-suite room with breakfast. We felt this was good value. Comfortable twin beds. Requested and received quiet room at the back on 2nd floor – we were not bothered with noise other than bins being emptied one morning. Friendly staff.
Enjoyed breakfast choice as usual. People should not expect full English or Continental as Holiday Inn Express group make it perfectly clear that it is a selection of juices, fresh fruit, cereals, muffins, toast plus sausage/beans/scrambled eggs. If you want full English go to Holiday Inn or Premier Inn and pay more money – you takes your choice.
Attractive, modern and recently refurbished breakfast/bar area.
Convenient position opposite Colliers Wood underground station which is on Northern Line and handy for central London. Several restaurants/cafes in area – staff recommended local Italian (menu looked good) and Indian but we went to cheaper Fayre & Square pub (turn right out of hotel and across the road.
Secure car park but only 10 spaces for 139 rooms (but you can park in nearby residential streets opposite to the left – free off peak, saving yourself £10 a night. Car park entrance to side of hotel – first spaces you come to with metal bollards belong to local flats not the hotel. Need to check in to hotel to get card to operate car park door. You have to go past these bollards and take a sharp turn right to back.

Negatives:
Room not warm enough – would’ve contacted reception if staying in room longer.
Plastic rucked up mattress cover made me sweat as previous person reported.

Main complaint: fire evacuation procedures left a lot to be desired if not downright dangerous. On the Saturday morning fire alarm went off. Staff member in corridor said false alarm. Then another member said it wasn’t and we should get out. When we got downstairs to our astonishment customers were sitting eating their breakfast with the alarm still ringing. I spoke to the receptionist who also said it was a false alarm so I proceeded to get breakfast items. Then a 4th member of staff said alarm showed a fire in an “alley” so we were all taken outside. All communication between staff and public then stopped. A fire engine pulled up and firemen went in with oxygen cylinders on. After some time they returned to the engine and customers started to drift back inside. I saw 2 people go back up in the lift but at no time did we hear any official statement that it was safe to return. Chaos then ensued in the breakfast area as there were so many people. Mugs, glasses, milk, orange juice ran out. But unlike what previous reporter said breakfast was available but understandably we had to be patient. The next morning the receptionist said someone smoking in a bedroom had triggered the alarm!

We would definitely stay here again as overall we were happy and hopefully management will have improved their fire evacuation procedures/communications. If in doubt get out and mind the pillars (decorated with London scenes) in the middle of the corridors on your way!

Room Tip: Rooms at back on 2nd floor are quieter (overlook small park). Receptionist said more 3rd floor room...

Firstly let me thank you for taking the time in giving us your feedback, we value all feedback received whether this is positive or negative as this allows us to improve the level of standard which we offer to our guests

The hotel has just completed a large refurbishment and redevelopment of the hotel which has meant that we have increased our beds from 83 to 139 and this has allowed us to replace in all the rooms the: beds, furniture, soft furnishings, TV, power Showers, Carpets and add in room safes and triple glazing throughout. We have also enlarged the guest areas like the bar, upper and lower lounge areas and business area and a ATM

I am pleased that you were happy with the hotel, the staff and the value for money.

Thank you again for your comments and I hope that you will stay with us again in the future

Stayed here 13th feb for one night while on business in London. Really good looking place inside and out (don't take notice of the pics on holiday inn website... They are (or were when I booked) the old place). Rooms are very smart and modern looking - you can tell they have spent some serious money on the refurb all round the place.
Staff were all very helpful and smart. Downside here was the lack of a descent eatery on site. They have a tiny bar food menu (4 or 5 starters and mains) which looks fairly ok..... Only problem here was half of it was out of stock (apparently the delivery hadnt turned up). I ordered a burger, salad and chips - both burger and bun were quite clearly microwaved! Chips probably were too.
Other than the poor in house food (there are loads of local restaurants/takeaways locally by the way) it was a descent stay. Would be tempted to stay there again if needed.

I don’t usually complain unless I feel an experience is really very poor, however the whole weekend experience was very unpleasant.

• Person operating the front desk was the same person managing the bar, on his own and we had to wait for so long we decided to leave and approach then later with a request for a room key card.
• Had to come back 3 times to get a 2nd key card for room as we were told there was a shortage.
• The room was very cold and had to call down to ask if they could help and were told they would adjust the temp but it made no difference.
• Very noisy we were on the 3rd floor but could hear everything going on in pub next door and what sounded like above us however we were left wondering how that could be as we were on the 3rd floor.
• Bed very uncomfortable as it sagged in the middle and we both rolled into the middle through out the night also the plastic mattress cover caused us to sweat during the night.
• Finally in the morning as we were about to go down to breakfast on the Sat, the fire alarm went off and the staff did not have a clue as to what to do as people were wondering around the hotel wondering where to go. There did not seem to be a fire marshal or anyone making sure people were in a safe area.
We thought there was a person holding a walkie talkie who might have been a staff member but it wasn't evident as no one had a high visibility jacket on with any kind of identification. It was a mess.
It was pretty scary as a few people we spoke to had other family members still in their rooms as they didn't think it a serious alarm and had this been a real fire half the hotel clientele would have burned to death and no one would have been none the wiser for days.

Needless to say we were unable to get breakfast that morning due to the above which was understandable and we were not told if there were alternative arrangements.

The last time I stayed at the holiday in the experience was not so great as they were in the middle of a renovation, and it was very noisy with staff going out for a smoke just outside my room throughout the night as noted in a previous review customer service was very poor when I mentioned the room noise and the fact I had not booked a twin room (I booked a double on line) and was told then that they couldn't do anything about it as that was what I had booked.

Interestingly enough on our arrival on Friday 1st March there was a gentleman customer in the middle of a heated discussion with a member of reception staff about the very same thing as per above.

But I figured it would be worth another try as both myself and my partner travel a lot around the US and Canada and have always had great experiences with Holiday Inn as they have high standards.

We are booked into stay in another Holiday Inn hotel in a few weeks time and are a little concerned the experience will be the same.

In my previous review I said "Will be better once renovations are complete". And how true that is. The rooms and reception/breakfast area have improved greatly, and look fresh and modern. Location and value for money remain good. Will stay again if in the area.

Recently refurbished this is a great hotel in a super location. Outside the congestion charge and within 50 yards of Colliers Wood station it only takes about 20 mins to be in the city. Good shops and restaurants nearby - nice staff and superb breakfast. For the price - beats most other hotels

Room Tip: Try to get a room on the back - front rooms face onto a busy road with lots of sirens shooting past!

I think this is a new addition to the Holiday Inn franchise, and it did have a nice clean and new feel to it.
The staff were very friendly and helpful, the chap on reception was a big help with our mission to find a pub with a pool table....where have they all gone in this bit of London??
The room on the top floor was clean, fresh and new, i even liked the strange blue light in the bathroom, i would have liked it even more if i had found the off switch sooner.
£60 + £10 for parking. The underground parking was really great with its own parking lobby to your floor without going to reception, As a business traveler i don't like carry everything to reception then bundle them all up and out again, so it was a nice feature.
The only down side was breakfast, it was really rubbish, no positives here i am afraid. Choose from Sausage (of sorts), Beans (cold) and Scrambled Egg (hideous). The OJ was syrupy goo, and the toaster was the standard 'go once, not done - go twice, burnt) conveyor. Followed by those dodgy little dense crumb frozen/defrosted muffins.
But the Horrible breakfast aside, it was still worth the £60.
i will just go out for breakfast next time.

Stayed one night with 2 kids in Feb.

Good points

Cheap
Clean
Directly opposite the tube station (Northern line)

Bad points

Family room was tiny it was not so much of a problem for us as we only stayed one night but far too small for a family of 4
No bath in room just a shower which was awkward for us travelling with kids
Breakfast was horrid - it should have been advertised as continental and not hot breakfast because sausages and beans are not what I'd described as a hot breakfast
