Booked in to the Athena hotel for one night during the Olympics. On arrival we were told that we were staying at their other hotel, the Royal Cambridge and were taken down the road Receptionist was very pleasant and we were given the choice of two basement rooms. We had a look at them, one was noisy caused by some machinery in a small yard behind the window and the other had a starnge odour emanating from it. We were then offered a third room, no 8 which we accepted It also had a slight odour but we couldn't be bothered to keep looking at other rooms as we were only staying one night.
The room was recently (poorly) redecorated but was a bit scruffy and I found 2 empty crisp packets in one of the drawers. We went out and didn't come back until the early hours after our Olympic session finished.
We went to breakfast in the morning and despite the reviews saying you could get sausages, bacon etc, I asked for a cooked breakfast but was told I couldn't have it, but I could have some ham from the fridge if I wanted. I declined. There were boiled eggs (which my wife, a cookery teacher) said were not fresh as the yolks had dropped to the bottom, there were cold baked beans, toast, cheese, cereal. It was pretty poor to be honest. The hotel boasts that it has a 3 star rating on food hygene, what they don't say is that the starring system is out of 5 and 3 star is pretty bad actually.
Would I stay here again? NO!
