“Two night stay with "dinner" on the first night.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 6, 2013

We stayed at the Bedford as part of a Superbreak holiday which included tickets for the Pompeii Exhibition at the British Museum. We had requested a room at the back and had a 4th floor room overlooking the garden - very quiet even with single glazed windows ! The room was
clean, comfortable with bedside tables, a wardrobe and quiet spacious.Good over the bath shower .Tea and coffee .
Excellent price for two nights b&b with dinner on the first night. As it was convenient we ate at the Bedford for this included dinner, though we could have used the voucher at one of the nearby hotels within the Imperial group. I don't know what the other hotels were offering , but the "dinner" at the Bedford was pathetic. We had fish and chips followed by apple crumble. The crumble was a microwaved offering that would do justice to a 99p supermarket deal. The fish was mainly batter and was tasteless. We didn't expect much and that's exactly what we got !!.
Breakfast was the usual bacon, beans, fried egg, sauasges. Danish pasteries and fresh oranges and grapefruit. Cheap bread for toast.
The reception staff are very helpful , and have an excellent knowledge of London.
Would I stay here again? Yes - because the price is very good compared with the more central hotels - Piccadilly/Leicester Sq etc.though if they did the included dinner again - i would eat elsewhere !

Room Tip: Quiet room at the back

I never stayed in a hotel in the 1950s but whenever I stay in the majestic Bedford Hotel on Southampton Row in London I feel like a happy time traveller. The rooms are comfortably furnished with flat screen tellies, coffee and tea making facilities, and incredibly powerful showers over old fashioned tubs. My fifth floor window looked out over the beautiful glass roof of the British Museum.

Reception staff are friendly, polite, and helpful. There are two large foyers, including a beautifully appointed one beside the breakfast room: comfy sofas and easy chairs arranged around the fireplace, looking out over a pretty garden terrace. I can imagine the Queen taking tea here and feeling quite at home. The breakfasts are good, and I have to praise the kitchen staff on improving what was dreadful dishwater coffee on my last visit here. When I visited in May, the coffee was stellar, strong, pleasantly bitter. There is a real international buzz in the public areas. I heard Danish, German, and Italian, as well as regional British and American accents.

Ask for a room that faces onto the gardens if you want to open your windows for fresh air, otherwise you will have the all night traffic of Southampton row to reckon with.

The hotel is conveniently located for any proposed London venture. It's wifi works well, and it's free.

Room Tip: Ask for a garden view!

Stayed here half a dozen times now. Very reasonable price , good sized rooms which are clean and comfortable. Staff are helpful . but the odd male on reception should learn to smile. Will definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Rooms at back higher up and north end are quieter .

This is a good middle-range hotel. I normally look for something a little cheaper, but mid-range hotels in London are often cramped and dingy, so it is wroth paying a little more. The hotel is clean, efficient and the staff are friendly. The public areas are nice and there's a little garden at the back. The location is good, with plenty of cafés and restaurants all around. No Underground immediately nearby, but only 10 minutes walk away. I paid 90£ via the Imperial Hotels website, including English breakfast. Cheaper rates may be available.

Room Tip: I got a room on the street-side (3rd floor), and liked the hustle and bustle of London outside - but...

If we hadn't eaten there we'd have probably given this hotel 4 - the location was just right for our 2 days in London and the price wasn't at all bad at £119 per night for 2 including breakfast, and including a free dinner the first night (booked direct). The reception is rather dated but the staff made up for that - very friendly, welcoming and helpful (though the failed shaver point in the bathroom wasn't fixed as promised).
Rooms have clearly been refurbished recently and were a good size with sufficient storage. We were at the back, where it's quiet - thanks to other reviewers. Beds and pillows were good, so a decent night's sleep. We liked the separate toilet and bathroom, but it does make for a tight bathroom. The shower was good and no problems with fluctuating heat, though the hot took a long time to come through.
I was amazed that they still have single glazed windows with metal frames - the heat loss must be considerable. The radiators (behind the curtains!) seemed to stay on much of the time so the room was warm enough, but somewhat dry (wet a towel, wring it out and hang it up - it'll keep some moisture in the air and be pretty much dry in the morning).
The real downside was the free dinner - we should have known by the very few people eating there. The tables, with white cloths at breakfast, were just left with bare Formica (somewhat old and scratched at that). The waiter looked like he really couldn't be bothered and the chef clearly felt the same - the food wasn't cooked TOO badly but it was clearly cheap ingredients with little care in preparation or in presentation. The waiter perked up a little towards the end and actually said more than a couple of words... does he think this makes up for earlier? There are other choices at their other hotels if you get the free dinner - one of them must be decent.
Breakfast was OK - a fair amount of choice but hot items were lukewarm. We like toast - but not with the cheap sliced bread they provided. With a little effort this could be much better.

Room Tip: Go for the back, away from Southampton Row, if you want quiet.

Me and my partner booked a two night stay here recently. I have stayed in one of the sister hotels in Russell Square and this hotel is nicer. The receptionist was helpful and prompt. We stayed in room 112 which is at the front of the hotel, ideal for me people watching. It was quite noisy during the night but worth it for the view. The room was clean, tidy and a decent size. The bathroom did have a bit of a smoky smell though, unsure where it came from. There was plenty of towels but the toiletries were rubbish. I liked the location, which had plenty of eateries and pubs and lots of character. The added bonus was the park 1 minute away which was lovely to wander around. The brekkie was nice, there was hot cooked and continental. The waiting staff were funny, although they didn't mean to. Their combined age was about 452 and they were so disorganised and pretty useless, but fun to watch. Id stay here again.

This hotel has an excellent location, about 9 minutes walk from Holborn tube station and a little less to Russell Square tube, which has lifts ( very convenient for those with heavy luggage). Lots of buses pass right by the hotel, and this is a more interesting ( and slightly cheaper but slower) way to get around.
The hotel looks a bit tired from outside, but my room (230) had very modern furniture and fittings, was very clean and the lighting was really good for reading in bed. The room was a bit small by Australian standards, but this is London, and I appreciated the wardrobe space and not having to live out of a suitcase. There was a flat screen TV and tea and coffee making, but the coffee was not to my taste; it's best to bring your own coffee, as the convenience stores across the road stock only the cheap instant stuff.
Rooms at the back of the hotel overlook a garden and do not get much traffic noise.
The staff are very friendly and helpful, and there are several lounge areas for spending quiet time. There is a nice outdoor area next to a small kids' pool, but on my visit it was too cold to stay out there.
The free wifi worked very well in my room, but strangely enough you have to ask for a new password every 8 hours, and you have to do this at reception (not by phoning from your room).
The breakfast room faces the pool and offers a selection of fruit juices, cereals, toast with jam and bacon, sausages and fried, scrambled or boiled eggs.
The coffee lounge/bar serves coffee for £1.40-£1.80, probably one of the cheapest in London.
I paid £90 a night from Monday to Thursday, £75 a night on Friday and Saturday, and £52 on Sunday. This is good value for comfortable accommodation in a great location about 400m from the British Museum.
I felt very relaxed here after busy days out seeing the sights in the bustling crowds and traffic.

Room Tip: The back rooms look over a garden and get very little traffic noise, apart from the ambulance and po...
