The fabulously friendly restaurant staff make up for the slight lapses in food. It seems a little harsh to whine about the bruscetta being too cold or the chips not cooked to order, (rather pre-cooked and heated) because if you want a local diner where you get a pretty good pasta, a great melanzane and great kiddies ice cream for a decent price, then look no further.
The problem is this - in a metropolis filled with hundreds of italian eateries, everyone's game has to be that bit higher than the provinces. So if plonked outside London this restaurant would do much better. In London Si Mangia does a clever job of welcoming cash-conscious families and delivering good food at a good price. The interior is a little frigid for that romantic meal and the wipe down table clothes demote it a little further in terms of refinement but the house wines and service make up for it.
No matter - we will keep going.
