Always use Stanfords when we require maps for foreign travel, also of course guide books. When there do not miss the great Sacred Cafe on ground floor. Not much space but GREAT food. We had a snack lunch yesterday(Saturday) before going to the ballet and had THE BEST scrambled egg, feta chease and spring onions on toast EVER. Cooked to order of course. The toasted brie and cammonbert baguette was great too, as was the coffee. As you can see we are fans of this little oasis. I might add we are both over 70 and we increased the average age of the other customers greatly!!! Must also add how cheerful the staff are, delivering the orders to table.

The signs tell you this map and travel shop has been trading 160 years. It has maps for all around the world from the common to the obscure. I got a map of Oaxaca in Mexico. The wife forgot to pack it for our trip but hey...I have it to refer to. But the shop has so much more, an amazing collection of globes, framed maps and prints, travel guides and travel literature - I got a book by Robert Louis Stevenson about his travels on a donkey in France -, some really cool furniture and gift stuff dotted around; travel accessories from torches to compasses - I bought a rain jacket that packs into a tiny space for that trip to Mexico during the rainy season. The shop is in Covent Garden, in the centre of London and, if you are nearby, it is worth stepping in for a browse.

Huge number of maps, guides and travel ideas, and with all the world covered. Would recommend anyone heading away on a trip to visit here first.

Stumbled on this place by accident and easily blew 2-3 hours wandering around. It. Has. Everything! And I wanted it all. So much cool travel-related stuff, and not just books! Want a shower curtain with a tube map on it? A giant globe? A vintage map of London? Done. I wish this place wasn't on a different continent! Can't recommend it enough.

For a traveller, walking into Stanfords felt like being a kid walking into a giant candy store! This is truly a meca for travellers located in the heart of London with an enormous selection of maps (paper and digital), guide books, travel literature, great gear, funky gifts. The store is built on 3 floors and each has an enormous map that you can walk on - the maps on each floor are different. The staff seemed to be very international and were very knowledgeable and helpful - they were all travellers themselves and mostly young with good tips. This store also has lots of gift items - map shower curtain, kids puzzles and toys, journals. You can ask for a map to be printed out in the store for a certain location or trip that you plan. I think it is open 7 days a week, maybe shorter hours on Sundays. And they have a big selection of autographed travel books which also make great gifts.
