Grange White Hall Hotel

Reviewed July 14, 2014

I have previously stayed in 3 different Grange Hotels and have always been happy, so booked this one for our weekend away because of its location near the British Museum. However it simply does not compare. The room was small, the bathroom tiny. There was no safe or minibar. More importantly, in view of it being extremely hot, there was no aircon. Our room faced the road, and because we had to have the window open to try and get some air, we got very little sleep. Bin lorries turned up both mornings, including Sunday, at 7am! Buses stopping outside and late night revellers all meant not a lot of sleep. On the Sunday afternoon having finished at the museum, we thought we'd come back to the tranquility of the hotel garden for some peace after all the crowds, only to find it was closed for a private function! Also, there is no free wifi (even a campsite I've just booked in Dorset has free wifi) so don't book in here if you're an internet addict! It is £5 for an hour, or £10 for 24 hours. There is no voile/net curtain at the window, so you have to put the blind down and the light on for any privacy while you're getting dressed! On a positive note, the bed was very comfortable and the staff were very good.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the garden.

Eight if us stayed overnight for a theatre visit. We reserved 4 twin rooms through booking.com. The hotel was in a good position for us as we were arriving at Euston and going to the theatre in the Strand. On arrival 2 rooms were ready but 2 were not, no problem as we were early. Of the 4 rooms 3 were much larger? We were told they had upgraded 3 but couldn't do the 4th? Odd
There was some query on arrival as to the rate, they tried to say we had booked a rate excluding VAT, fortunately I had printed out the confirmation showing the price including VAT. The two girls on reception seemed to be struggling checking us in, their English was limited and didn't seem at all capable. We enjoyed our stay, the hotel is nice if a bit tired but good value for what we paid. On checking out the next morning we had the same discussion over the price, the girls who checked us in had not corrected the price. The young lady on reception this time was lovely, sorted the problem efficiently and arranged for our bags to be taken care of for the day.

Thank you for taking the time to make a review. The hotel is a townhouse hotel which means that all rooms are of different shapes and sizes. Although we endeavour to upgrade guests whenever we can, this is not always possible. I am sorry your expectations were not fully satisfied.

This was my first stay in this hotel. It is located right beside the British museum; a nice area and well located to explore the city. The check-in is a "do it yourself" via a tablet on the counter. A bit tedious and some other hotels have mastered this better by letting you book in advance via internet or at least ensuring they have your booking details, so you don't have to fill in everything when you arrive. Your data will obviously be kept so your next check-in will be much faster. My room was pretty standard and I have seen many smaller rooms in London. It lacked airco though and also a safe. No other safes were available (all in use) which I found pretty annoying. Wifi was free though. The absolute charm of this hotel is the garden and the outside terrace. You won't find this in many London hotels! The hotel bar is located next to reception and not really secluded or particularly cozy, but if you retreat to the garden this shouldn't be a problem. All in all a descent hotel and given the price a good alternative for those who do not want to pay fortunes but still require minimum standards.

Room Tip: The back of the hotel overlooks the inside garden and will definitely be quieter than the front.

If you enjoy a more traditional feel to your London hotels, then I would recommend the Grange White Hall. It has managed to maintain the feel of hotel from a bygone era with many of the modern amenities expected of today's traveller. We arrived late in the evening, entering the small but lovely lobby with its dark wood front desk, glass and brass elevator, and cozy bar area with the World Cup football match playing. The staff was very attentive and accommodating. I had requested a garden-view room on an upper floor; while they could provide the garden view, they were not able to provide a floor on a high floor, so they upgraded our room. Our room (103) was very nice. Here the dark wood theme continued with the desk, side tables, doors and even the wall-mounted tea cabinet. Being on the first floor, the room had very high, corniced ceilings and a large, floor-to-ceiling sash window that opened onto a small balcony. The bathroom was very clean, tiled with two windows that opened. It included a large tub with shower, and a sink area with a large mirror. A nice selection of toiletries is provided.

We opened the windows as the room was not air conditioned, and the room instantly cooled. The beds (two twins together) were comfortable, with ample pillows provided. We had a good, quiet sleep.

Our room rate (~110 GBP) included continental breakfast. This was available in a lovely breakfast room on the ground floor (nice not to be in the basement as is the case in most townhouse-style hotels) and overlooked the garden. There are tables on the garden terrace, but as it had rained overnight, we sat indoors. The continental breakfast is ample and of reasonable choice and quality. However, for the rate charged if not included (about 17 GBP) not in my opinion worth it if you have to pay for it separately. The excellent service is repeated in the breakfast room, where there is ample staff to serve you (and perhaps what your are paying for at breakfast).

Other nice features of the hotel:
24-hour room service
Right next to the British Museum.
Close to Russell Square
Lots of restaurants nearby with a variety of food style choices
Close to Kings Cross Station (we walked, although we were pulling light luggage)...one subway station away.

I often stay up in London with work and was booked in here as the usual hotel I stay in was fully booked. I really like this hotel, I only stayed one night but had room service in the evening as I checked in late and had a great nights sleep.
My room wasn't the biggest but had huge sash windows that were opened before I got there as it was a warm day so the room was light and airy.
Breakfast is served from seven, which is great when you have an early start. They have a garden at the back and the museum is around the corner so next time I'm up there I hope to finish early and take full advantage of both of these things.
I will always try and book this when in London.

Room Tip: Had a room overlooking the main road and managed to sleep with the windows open without being distur...

The hotel was on a great location for trains, sight seeing, shopping and restaurants. Hotel staff were very helpful. Tasty breakfast included in our visit. Beautiful gardens. The hotel was just around the corner from the British museum-which should be on everyone's sightseeing list.
Room & bathroom were very clean.
