“Great location, but a 2 star hotel”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 14, 2013

The Marble Arch Inn is ideally located and cheaply priced. If your looking to stay at a convenient location in London on a budget, this is the place to stay. It's only a couple of minutes walk from Hyde Park and Oxford Street, and a short taxi ride away from the West End. That's why I am giving this 2 star hotel 3/5.

Do bear in mind though, this is a 2 star hotel. Many rooms have shared toilet and shower rooms, and our room (which was on the ground floor) smelt very damp. The room was clean though. We only stayed for two nights and the room was turned over on the second day. The rooms have tea and coffee making facilities as well.

The staff are very helpful, and will gladly book a taxi for you.

Room Tip: Don't stay on the ground floor.

We were a couple that went to London to basically shop and be tourists, and booked into this hotel on the purity of its good location. Though after booking I found several horrible reviews of the hotel and tried to come in contact with the hotel to hear if I could cancel, but they wouldn't return mine or my booking agency's calls.

When we arrived the room was, as many London hotel rooms are, very small. When you go in to the bathroom be sure that nobody is showering, because you'll risk breaking their nose whilst opening the door. The water kept on dripping from the bathroom sink, and i found a couple of bugs in the room as well. If you're interested in this hotel because of its location, I would like to inform you that there are several other bed and breakfast hotels on the same street, which might be worth a try, as we had to stop by all of them to try to find the Marble Arch Inn.

You also have to leave your key in the reception whenever you go out, and we realized that the three other receptionists that didn't check us in and that didn't even know if we stayed in the hotel, just gave us the keynumber we asked for, so we didn't feel very safe with computers and jewelry lying around in the room.

We are sad to read your comments but strongly feel that you have put this comments because you did not get a refund for your advance prepaid booking.

There are no bugs in the hotel as we are regularly inspected by our pest control company and get a clean bill of health. Our reception is manned 24/7 and we have always kept the keys at reception. This is because guests often lose the keys or come back at different times and need access to the room. Both these problems are solved by keeping the keys at reception.

This was definitely one of the worst stays I have ever experienced - worse than any hoStel possible. At first we were given the double room (basic type) in the basement, which was the size of a small closet - two people could not fit inside (unless one is standing up and the other is lying on the bed!). Obviously there was no space to turn around, let alone to put our luggage. Honestly unimaginable they are considering it a room for two! Also, the windows of these rooms share a 1x1m courtyard with the toilets. The shared bathroom is another surprise = besides being big enough to fit a 5 year old, with no space to change your clothes, the shower head was broken which made the experience of running down the stairs half naked even better. The beds themselves were really uncomfortable - you could feel the springs poking. These rooms are not shown in the photos - the ones that you see are their best ones we upgraded to after couple of days (they offered no refund for leaving the place early, so we had to wait for the rooms to become available). Paying for the upgrade meant that we ended up spending the same amount we would have if we went to a nice standard hotel. Funnily enough, on our way out we asked for some help to take our luggage down the stairs and they refused to help us. The only good thing I can say for this place is that the housekeeping is good - the place is kept clean, and the girl receptionist was nice.

We sincerely believe that this guests have exaggerated most of their comments. Our double basic rooms are very popular for couples who come for shopping and just come back at night to sleep.

The reasons for the bad comments are because they made an advanced prepaid booking and when we refused to refund the money, they told us that they will post a bad review.

We are a 2 star hotel and we enjoy occupancy rates in excess of 90% and if the comments were true, we would be bankrupt by now.

Unfortunately we have no porter service but we definitely would help people who genuinely needed assistance.

We stayed at Marble Arch Inn för 3 nights, we were in London mostly to do some (or alot of) shopping.
Very good location, just a few minutes from Oxford Street och tube stations.
The rooms are quite small but if you don't plan on spending to much time in the room that is not a problem. We had a room with own shower which was small and without any cover. Would have liked a shower curtain, but we found a way to put a towel in front of it.

Friendly staff and clean rooms, and they have someone at the desk 24/7.
Would definitley stay there again!

We appreciate you taking the time to post your review and glad to note that you enjoyed your stay.

We will definitely look at the possibility of providing a shower curtain in those rooms which need one.

The staff were very nice. Very easy to check in and helpful through out our stay. Keeping in mind this is a B&B and not 5 star hotel in London - I was very impressed. Very short walk to the underground which we used frequently for transportation. Good little coffee shop a block away and across the street is a nice restaurant. The accommodations were very clean. We rented two rooms; one with a shower and one with out. The shared shower was actually much nicer and very convenient and so paying the extra private shower costs probably wasn't worth it. This isn't to say the private shower wasn't worth it - just that the shared shower was good.

Room Tip: Unless you really need a private shower, save a couple of bucks and just get the standard room.

The pros
Location is not bad. Minutes from Oxford Street (walking distance to Primark), metro station, LOTS of shopping and an asian area with plenty of halal food. A nice looking pub steps away from hotel entrance.

Very cheap for Oxford area... but have to compromise on space

Counter is manned 24/7. Good thing cos you need to buzz to get in. They are all polite and pleasant.

Housekeeping is excellent. Despite the cramped area filled with shopping bags (refer to details below), the person still manage to tidy the beds and clear the extra shopping bags and junk away. Very proactive and we tried to throw away some stuff we no longer need and they return it to us, thinking we forgotten to pack it.

Free internet is very limiting. What's App and general surfing only. No facebook:( Purchased a 12 hour slots for 5 pounds to splurge at the end of the trip and found that ok. Even so, it is limited to 1 device at a time.

The cons

We booked a room for five. Please be warned that it is really cramped for 5 people. There's two tiny double beds and 1 single bed squeezed into a tiny room with a tiny square bathroom (imagine a division separating bath and toilet area (2 triangles forming the square)). Not great cos we are all gals and we were there for shopping.

We were given a room at the basement and have to lug our luggage down two flights of tiny staircases. Again not great since we shopped quite a bit and our luggage are absolutely heavy when we are leaving! Also, window open out and can hear people chatting etc when they are passing by

Absolutely little room for packing (basically we have to do it by fitting our open luggage like a jigsaw (i used the bed, no room on floor)

While we have to return the key and retrieved it when we are back, there's no checking of identification. Anyone could have stroll in and grab the key. In their defense, perhaps there are only 19 rooms and they recognise the people. Even so, that doesn't feel very safe.

Room Tip: Really small room, if travelling with a bigger party, split up

We really appreciate your response and for highlighting the good points.

As far as the identification of guests is concerned, we will ask for the name only if we do not
recognise the person. Our staff have been here for a long time and take the security very seriously.

As for the keys, some guests either lose their keys or come at different times and by leaving the keys at reception, we solve both those problems.

I agree our rooms are small but based in London's Victorian buildings, we have tried hard to keep a delicate balance between space and facilities that our guests require.

Our location, friendly service and reasonable tariffs more than compensate for that.

When we arrived they gave us a room next to the shared bathroom. The smell in the room was bad and we could not sleep all night because of people going in and out the toilet. They day after we asked to change room and they immediately gave us another room. This one was silent and made our stay a good stay. Rooms are small but the hotel is clean and very central. For this price I don't think you can find any better in central London.
