Owner description: St Martin-in-the-Fields is a landmark. Its fine Georgian architecture and prominent location place it at the heart of the nation. Its work has valued historic tradition, but St Martin’s has always been innovative in response to changing needs. From London’s first free lending library to the first religious broadcast, St Martin’s has broken new ground in defining what it means to be a church. Solidifying its position for years to come, St Martin's has an award-winning cafe, puts on concerts with London's best musicians, and hosts fantastic events in its unique subterranean spaces. Free lunchtime concerts take place every Monday, Tuesday and Friday, a fantastic way to hear both established and emerging stars of the classical scene. As well as the fantastic food on offer in the Cafe in the Crypt, during the summer months St Martin's opens the Cafe in the Courtyard, offering a host of al fresco delights.

If you are in the Trafalgar Square area don't pass this by. The inside is magnificent and the architecture excellent. They have frequent concerts for which the acoustics must be amazing. In the crypt in the basement there is a very well laid out cafeteria with subdued lighting which complements the setting - also there are toilets which is handy to know! Well worth a visit if you are nearby visiting the National Portrait Gallery or Westmister.

On bank holiday Monday, we walked into St Martin-in-the-fields to light a candle before travelling home.
We were so lucky to catch a rehersal in progress for the evening concert of Nelsons Mass.
To sit in a stunning church listening to the most beautiful music, was incredibly moving for both of us.

Catching a free lunchtime concert has been on my wish list for all the many years I have been travelling to London. This week I managed it! And I was so thrilled that we did. The church itself was a surprise inside - bright and welcoming with a modern facility in the crypt which is great for all sorts of other activities including eating (which we didn't), shopping (which we didn't either) and brass rubbing, tours etc etc... (no - you've got the gist!) But we were there for the lunchtime concert and it's not an exaggeration to say that we completely forgot we were in the heart of a traffic choked city. Escapism in its purest form - a place to reflect and enjoy the music and evidently a true community church. The place was full - a full church is a most unusual sight in the UK in my experience. Everyone was so warm and welcoming, and it was heartening to see a church with such a broad community reach. The programme we listened to was Mozart, Brahms and Mendelssohn - exquisite. And the way it was organised was simple and effective - understanding that some locals may be popping in during their lunch break and therefore having to arrive a little late or leave a little early. If you are passing by check out the programme which is well publicised in online listings, in the crypt and on posters around the church. So glad I've been there and I hope I'll get the chance to go again.

We recently attended Mozart's Requim at St. Martin. We ate dinner in the crypt before hand. The food was good and reasonably priced. Not typical cafeteria food. The concert by candlelight was amazing!

Visit this place at the right time and you will catch the orchestra in rehearsal, which is beautiful to listen to. There is also a wonderful cafe and book shop in the crypt area.
