“Exceptionally good recital”

Went to a free recital at St James in Piccadilly. Rebecca Moon gave a sumptuous rendition of Schumann's Frauenliebe in this pretty little church with excellent acoustics. Her gifted accompanist Johan Hugosson, then played a rousing Chopin Scherzo, followed by his own compositions, the romantic Gare du Nord and the spectacular Tango Cataclismo. Rebecca closed the performance with a beautiful premier of Hugosson's A Kiss, set to a poem by Thomas Hardy. Both artists were outstanding. A charming hour spent in central London. Check their programme for upcoming events!

St James Piccadilly often holds free lunchtime concerts (gold coin donation recommended) and if you're travelling about in London and want some down time this is the place to go. Many of the performers are top students from the Royal College or Royal Academy (depending on programming) and are immensely talented professionals. The market is in the courtyard of the church six days a week also which is a real treat.

I heard a performance of The Messiah in this beautiful church and the acoustics and general ambience were great. It's a particularly good place to hear Baroque music - I would guess that The Messiah could have been performed there when Handel was around!

The church itself is definitely worth a visit, as is the market at the front and the cafe. It's good in any weather.

They have a number of events there including meetings of the William Blake society (I'm a fan of Blake so should go to one!).

Build in the 17th century under Sir Christopher Wren's architecture, damaged in WO II, restored in 1954, this church watches over bustling Piccadilly. Step inside and enjoy a moment of quietness. However, St. James's Church stands in the middle of the 21st century with a souvenir stall in the hall, a Caffè Nero restaurant on the premises and the Piccadilly Craft Market on the forecourt. You don't pass over all this attractions in a hurry.

Just a few steps down from Piccadilly Circus is St James's Church. It's a beautiful and simple building. If you're lucky, you'll go there when a choir is rehearsing for one of the many concerts the church offers in the evening. Last time we were there, a large choir was rehearsing for a concert of baroque music. It was spellbinding.
One other good reason for visiting is the grounds. There are benches where you can rest and reflect, or simply eat your lunch. And there are regular small markets there. Some days, there are antiques and curios for sale. Most days, there are a number of stalls selling a wide variety of delicious food.
Not many people seem to know about this place, despite it's central location. Now you do.
