Product design has always fascinated me, and even more so after I read Deyan Sudjic's 'The Language of Things'. I was pleasantly surprised to learn Deyan Sudjic is the current director of the museum. It houses many of the old design archetypes such as the Anglepoise and the red telephone booth. One level contained the winners of the 2013 design awards, which was fascinating. Great museum. It is located on Shad Thames and faces River Thames. Worth a see.

Although slightly surprised by the entrance cost, was not disappointed. In fact by being a smaller exhibition space enabled us to enjoy the exhibits more. Particularly enjoyed 'Design of the Year' on the first floor, I so want musical postcards! Overall a well spaced and thought out place to visit to look at the evolution of design. One very small negative a slight over emphasis on chair/seating design. Intrigued by the the design of opt he back of our current coinage - who knew there was an overall concept! The coffee and and gift shop were very good and the staff were very friendly and helpful. A good spot to visit for a 60 minute shot of design!

At just under 12 pounds the entry fee is quite high, however for those who are interested in design, past, present and future, this small museum is ideal. Would also be good for older children.
There is a cafe on site, (has outdoor seating) that makes a great coffee. There is also a shop with a lot of interesting objects, from small spinning tops (that work) to kitchen wear, books etc. I think it is worth visiting at least once. There is also the Blue Print cafe/restaurant upstairs, with stunning vies over the Thames.

We used our London Attractions 2for1 train discount which meant it cost £11.95 for two people which we thought was very reasonable.
The exhibition on the top floor - Extraordinary Stories - is really interesting for both adults and children. It shows everything from the angle poise lamp to the design of traffic lights and road signs.
The first floor - Designs of the Year 2013 - was interesting but we preferred the top floor exhibition.
We had a drink each in the cafe on the ground floor which were a bit pricey but looking at the salads and other food on offer and the price, we thought they looked very good value for money and very tasty with interesting salads, tarts and sandwiches.

I really enjoyed what they had, for someone who visits London museums fairly regularly this costs no more than many special exhibition at the Tate, V&A, British museum etc. But for day visitors to London you can probably do more. Having said that they currently have the best design of 2013 which was great and varied in subject matter. Especially loved the UK micro kingdoms exhibited but it was tiny, nice idea though. We used clubcard vouchers for our tickets, so also great value for money!
