Owner description: Most of this iconic building was built in the mid-19th century following a devastating fire in 1834. Westminster Hall survived the fire and dates from 1097. Visitors can book tours through the House of Commons and the House of Lords, and are welcome to watch debates and committees when the Houses are sitting..

We visited in the hope we would see or get to meet an MP. Fat chance! But we looked around at this magnificent building, bought a few trinkets and had tea in the cafe. Good stuff!

We went for one of the tours round Westminster. It was fabulous, our guide was called Alan and he really knew his stuff. He had been working there for 20 years. The tour lasted about 1.5 hrs and there was a lot of walking to be done. Alan had a great sence of humor and made the history interesting.

There is two down sides to the tour 1: you are not allowed to take photos and 2: you can not sit in the seats in the House of Lords or commons. But this is a small price to pay for such a great day.

She is the Mother of Parliaments - and full of eccentricities.
If you are British, you can ask your local MP to make the arrangements for free, but anyone can pay to tour the buildings that date back in places to 1099.
The tour takes in both Houses of Parliament (always providing the Lords and the MPs are not sitting).
The building is enormous, glorious, over-the-top and fantastical, and the guides are witty.
The 90 minute tour includes a visit to the Queen's rooms with two thrones - one in the House of Lords where the Queen's Speech is presented to the two Houses after the MPs have slammed the door in the face of Black Rod (her messenger) as he arrives to summon them to hear what laws will be their duty to discuss in the coming months.
The House of Lords is ornate, the House of Commons mundane, yet great things (and great works of art) are consistent with the whole building.

The Houses of Parliament are a Gothic Revival Masterpiece. Great History and a working seat of government. Very cool.
