Owner description: Most of this iconic building was built in the mid-19th century following a devastating fire in 1834. Westminster Hall survived the fire and dates from 1097. Visitors can book tours through the House of Commons and the House of Lords, and are welcome to watch debates and committees when the Houses are sitting..

I missed a chance to visit Parliament two years ago and made a point of going this year. Even though I went at the end of the day when my feet were killing me, it was well worth the visit. It's been one of my favorite buildings from the outside for a while, and the inside is just as gorgeous and detailed. Being American, it's fascinating to see how the UK Parliament operates and this tour gives a crash course in Parliamentary ways. The guide started us on a fast walk from Westminster Hall to the other end of the building, then took us through the House of Lords all the way up to the House of Commons. The Lords obviously have the most opulent rooms, with fantastic decorations and historical art, including a chamber lined portraits of the whole Tudor family. The Lords' section also includes the room where the Queen gets ready to open Parliament, which was very exciting to see. The Commons' chambers are more sparse but no less historically fascinating, with lots of sculpture and paintings. Westminster Hall is very sparse, but it is the oldest surviving part of the old Palace and thus a treat to walk around. It's jarring to see the 13th century architecture in the Hall after 90 minutes of Victorian design. The whole thing is very interesting if you're at all drawn to British politics and history and want to know how the Parliamentary system has evolved over the centuries.

We had a very interesting few hours here, our local MP was fantastic and met us in the main hall and then took us around the main areas (including coffee on the terrace) Sat in on a debate in the House of Commons and had a brief look around the House of Lords. Fantastic surroundings and everyone should go!

it's a neat place to see but as far as i found you couldn't go inside for a tour unless you had special permission and an escort; which was dissapointing but the outside was beautiful and worth the visit (even in the rain).
