Grange Holborn Hotel
Ranked #416 of 1,075 Hotels in London
Reviewed November 23, 2013

I booked this hotel for one night through last minute.com. The main driving factor was the hotels location and rating suggesting it was five stars.

Upon check in initial impressions were good, the room was a decent size and had a king size bed. However the main problem with the room was the general condition, the bathroom especially was tired, dirty (with stains and lime scale everywhere) and in desperate need of renovation, additionally the bathroom was smaller than those in holiday inn express hotels.

Whilst I realise being in Central London the hotel will have lots of different guests staying mostly only one night, this is not a budget hotel and there is no real excuse not to keep the rooms fresh.

I can not comment on the gym or pool as I did not use these during my stay nor did we eat in the hotel itself.

Dear Tommy2,

We are sorry to hear that your overall stay at the hotel did not meet with your expectations.

Your feedback about décor is greatly appreciated and we have already refurbished the hotel's lobby and bar area and received positive feedback from valued guests. We have further plans for additional refurbishment into 2014 and beyond in line with our continued endeavours to improve the facilities and services available to our guests. We will take your additional comments into consideration.

I do hope you will return to the hotel in the future to make use of our Health Club and Spa and to experience more of the facilities and services the hotel has to offer.

Kind regards,

PatrickM

The service was good, the room was good, the food was good, but the traffic noise from the main street could cause some annoyance to light sleepers. It is a couple of minutes walk from Holborn tube so location-wise it is good.

Good, big standard city centre hotel, convenient for both west end and city. Rooms are very good for the price, though I suspect slightly noisy on the lower floors - go for anything above the 6th.

Breakfast is on the money, gym good.

This hotel is marketed as 5 star but certainly isn't. The rooms are tired with chipped furniture, stains on the floor and noisy air conditioning. The place also needs a good clean and dust. The reception staff are not discreet and felt the need to comment on our sleeping arrangements (!). The bathroom in the bedroom was a decent size but the shower and bath were horrible. The area outside the hotel isnt that nice at night although this is common in parts of London. The room was priced in line with 3 star and this is what you get so dont be fooled by the discounted rooms.

The hotel is conveniently located for exploring London and not too bad at all - but it is indeed NOT a 5 star hotel. Rooms are average and bath rooms are very small. The heating system is a disaster. In order to get a room with an operating air conditioning/heating system, I needed to change three times the room. Staff was very friendly - many thanks to Viktor for his kind assistance - and they offered me free breakfast for compensation, which I found ok. But they ned to fix this issue. Besides, so called king/queen size beds are actually two single matresses put together, which destroys sleep comfort. Amenities were below average, I needed to ask every night for dental and shaving kits, which were provided, but shall be in the room. Overall, overrated hotel with urgent issues to be fixed.

Room Tip: Check in advance if air conditioning is working!

Stayed in this hotel last week for four nights with three adult children. Our room was spacious and comfortable and easy to remember room number "911". Our family were given a free upgrade to a large family room with large bathroom. We have stayed in this hotel in the past and have always found the location very convenient, friendly staff and rooms very comfortable. The breakfast which was included in our room rate was very enjoyable. We will definitely return to this hotel

Room Tip: higher floors are better

This is a slightly strange hotel. The reception and restaurants are in a slightly different locations from the room. Getting into the rooms is almost like being in a different building. The room itself was average. The bed was passable. But the bathroom was incredibly tiny, and it was barely able to put on my make-up before work given the way the bathroom doors were organized. It was almost shameful. I honestly would have been happier in a Marriott or a nice Holiday Inn.

But what made the hotel decent was the quality of the gym / spa area. I didn't use the pool, but it looked gorgeous. I appreciated the standard of the equipment that was available as it was a much higher level of quality than the hotel. The only caveat was that the gym didn't open until quite late in the morning (i.e. after 6:30am). That meant, for someone that had an 8am meeting; that it really wasn't possible to get in a good workout. I asked if there was earlier access, and the hostility I received was quite shocking. A polite but firm answer would have sufficed.

Dear Sd_in_Switzerland,

Thank you for staying with us in October when you visited London. We are sorry to hear your stay was not to your complete satisfaction.

Our bars and restaurants are all located on the hotel's ground floor or 1st floor which are sign posted for convenience. Whilst some bathrooms may vary in size, they are all fitted with make up mirrors for your comfort. We are delighted to hear your comments regarding the health club and spa and will note your comments regarding opening times should we review this.

Kind regards,

PatrickM
