“An initial bumpy start but an overall OK stay”
Reviewed January 14, 2013

After reading these reviews I must admit we were nervous as to what to expect at Tophams, particularly given the surprising room prices and discounted rates! but overall the stay wasn't too bad. I can however confirm some aspects of those reviews as being correct.

We were greeted by a friendly gentlemen (the only one!) on arrival, but then soon discovered - at no surprise - that the lifts weren't working. Still in a positive mood we lugged our bags up 4 flights of stairs and down thin winding corridors to our room. Opening the door, and within one step, we walked straight into our bed with inches of space around it to move. We too smelt (and saw) damp in the room and were shocked to find cigarette buts in the draws and questionable hygiene standards. However, after complaining and to the hotels credit we were quickly apologised to and transferred to another room - although I question whether this would have happened without the helpful guy at the desk. Within 20 minutes the next room was far more pleasant, spacious and clean! From that point on our weekend stay was fine - we were unfortunate enough to have some loud guests staying at the same time and thin walls can make for light sleeping, but overall at approx £70 per night it wasn't too bad. Very close to the station and easy access to all in Victoria.

We are a family with three children who booked and paid two rooms in advance. When we arrived we were told that -due to bla, bla, bla (several non solid explanations)- we were going to be assigned two rooms in different floors, and one of it was going to be with a shared bathroom! (and we paid in advance for two private bathroom suites!!!).
This situation, plus the very small and uncomfortable breakfast room, and the fact that during our 3 nights stay the fire alarm sounded 3 times!!, is definetily putting this hotel in our black list.

Firstly, I have to say that the staff at this Belgravia Hotel were first class. From check in, to room change (later) and finally breakfast, they couldn't do enough and for that reason they have my huge sympathy. I say sympathy because I cannot imagine what it must be like to have to turn up each day knowing that you will have to deflect many complaints. The location is excellent and the common parts are very welcoming and stylishly decorated but then you get to the room (or in our case rooms) and that is where it all goes wrong. Shabby decoration, damp smells, mouldy showers with missing grouting and worst of all the cheapest mattresses with pinging springs that go off alarmingly each time you move. The duvet was a inch thick piece of matted nylon and the pillow like a cloud sculpture made of lumps of foam! TV's mounted on walls with exposed wires dangling down. One coat hanger. The only bearable thing was the bargain price we paid through Hotels.Com. £70 including breakfast but I can't say we got much sleep.

Room Tip: Avoid 210, smells of damp and mattress is appalling. 304 was marginally better but not much.

staff were lovely, really friendly. i had to ask for amenities in the room, soap, shampoo, hairdryer etc, which came immediately but it should have been in the room already. Our ceiling flooded during the night from the room above having a bath! this was attended to immediately but no compensation offere. nice room,
afternoon is a total rip off, total waste of money, too expensive and tasteless...dont waste your money

This was our first visit to Tophams but I would now not choose anywhere else in London. It is only a few minutes walk from Victoria mainline or coach station and is central for Westminster and other parts of London. Tophams is like a mini-country house hotel in the centre of London. There is no formal reception desk but, rather, an antique table with free apples and danish pastries! You are made to feel a welcome guest on arrival and this total quality of services extends right through your stay. We shall be back. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Our room was excellent - it is a very quiet location

Me my husband and our children visited Tophams Hotel for the third time. This year we decided to prolong our trip and stay for 7 nights as our experience last time was magnificent.

Once again everything was great: room was spacious clean, and comfortable and we also had a balcony. Breakfast was excellent and we couldn't get enough of the chocolate muffins.

Following our usual tradition we had Afternoon Tea twice. We just love it! Great to catch a breath and reflect on the day!

The location is extremely important for us as we like to spend most of the day out and about ; also as we have two little children so it is great that Victoria Station is just 2 min away, as all of the shopping, Harrods as well as the museums are just walking distance.

I am shocked reading some of the negative reviews below as we are definitely coming back in the summer and will be always using Tophams!

Room Tip: We liked room 303

Me and my partner booked to stay in the hotel for new years eve, the location was brilliant, however the staff were unwelcoming and not very helpfull, as we arrived in London before check-in we asked if we could leave our bags, which they agreed and told us they would be taken to our room asap however when we returned hours later they were still laying around in reception, they did not tell us when breakfast was or check out the next day . The room was awfull the blind was mouldy, the air con vent was missing so there was just a hole, the walls were damp, the door handle on the bathroom door was hanging off and the shower leaked all over the floor. for a 4* hotel this was poor and lookely we didnt have to spend long in the room. would not recomend this hotel
