Great new hotel - close to Stratford - where all the action for the Olympics are. Very well connected - the hotel is minutes away from the DLR station and connected by a walk-way.

Staff are friendly and efficient - a young enthusiastic lot.

As in all other Aloft properties, its a no frills, Value For Money property. Rooms being new are clean and efficient. If one doesn't have expectations of a fancy hotel and if your meetings etc are well planned, this is a good place to stop by.

Room Tip: Get a room facing the river on the higher floor.

When you consider the disadvantages of this hotel, where I stayed a full week, you have to pay attention to the brand which runs it and the fact that this is the one of the two hotels they run in Europe. Its really a low-service concept, but also the costs of staying are lower than in hotels with room service and business lounges.

As so many have pointed out here, the hotel is far away and nearby surroundings wont provide much if you are not attending a conference or something in the ExCel. In contrast to what someone mentioned here, there was a restaurant onsite - a quite good one - and in the evening they held a nice bar with live DJ and the manager chatting with customers.

Would definitely stay in this hotel again, but this time would confirm the late-night DLR schedules beforehand!

First of all I have to say the staff at reception were smiley helpful people and that always a good sign.
Nice room, good shower, decorations a bit dull but everything worked . There are a bit stingey on the teabags and coffee so best bring some with you. Breakfast self serve and a minimilist continental but not bad I have had a lot worse. Now the most convenient thing about it is that its a very short walk from the DLR. Don't walk down to road level just walk around Excel and there is the back door next to the restaurent hardly more than 100 yds away from the train. A very new quite plush hotel with free to use swimming pool well worth a stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the river side its a much better view.

We stayed here with our 2 kids on a recent trip to London. We knew from the web site and google that it was out of the way, but it was the only hotel available for our Starwood points. The reviews here were helpful in our expectations, and we have no regrets.

1) The DLR is very convenient and took us to the Tower of London stop in about 20 mins. From there, you can take the 15 bus for a nice trip through many of the major attractions. You can also connect to the jubilee underground line after a couple of stops on the DLR. Note:We live in the NY metro area, and are used to taking a train ride into a city, so the trek was not a problem for us.

2) The rooms were very spacious and comfortable. Internet is free and worked well. The room also had a fridge.

3) Service was average, but not terrible. Some staff spoke limited English, and really should not be employed at the check-in desk.

4) There is not much else near the place, and it is hard to find if you take a cab. Our cab driver was patient and found the place after asking a couple of security guards.

In summary, if you don't mind the train ride into London, and are looking for a nice, comfortable place to sleep, which is reasonably priced, this place should be fine. BTW, this was our first trip to London, and I would stay here again if I return (unless I get suddenly rich and can afford one of the posh hotels in central London :-).

I stayed at the Aloft London Excel as a last resort because London hotels near Canary Wharf were sold out. There are several things that the hotel is definitely lacking.

Location: perhaps convenient to the Excel convention center, but is far away from everything else (50+ GBP for a taxi ride between here and Piccadilly!!). THREE different London taxi drivers (who are supposedly direction-experts) could not find this place - they could find Excel convention center, but we drove around looking for the Aloft hotel. Also, since there is nothing nearby, one would need a taxi ride to get to any restaurants.

Hotel is new - so that may be of interest to travelers. The rooms are nicely decorated (if a bit dark due to small windows and lack of lamps), clean, and fairly spacious.

Amenities: Terrible - there is NO room service, no hotel restaurant, no club lounge. There is a Re-Fuel station that was poorly stocked and little variety. Normally, this would not be a huge issue, except that this hotel is so far away from restaurants/pubs that this leaves one with little to no options for dining. This is quite inconvenient for business traveler who works fairly late. There is a fitness center that, once again, has limited number of equipment - so one is waiting quite a while if the 2-3 treadmills are already in use. The pictures of the pool (on website) looks nice, but was not operational when I visited. The one positive amenity is free-shuttle service (limited times) to/fro hotel and Canary Wharf.

Services: Terrible - check-in was a tedious process. The staff could not offer any recommendations for "nearby" restaurants (nothing nearby), did not have sense of direction of where the hotel was with respect to Canary Wharf, would not set up a wake-up call, did not have any local maps...I was quite shocked at the terrible level of service. The one nice service was automated check-out kiosk - of course, that did not involve a staff member, so perhaps that is why it went so smoothly.

In summary, as a business traveler who seeks some baseline conveniences, I would not return to this hotel. There were too many points which makes travel more difficult. The one redeeming aspect is that the price-point was low compared to other hotels.

I booked this hotel on lastminute.com as a top secret hotel, so it was a bit of a gamble, but boy did the gamble pay off. I had a feeling that it would be the Aloft and I was right. I was travelling with my wife and we have stayed at many hotels in the UK and abroad and this is by far one of the more modern and chic hotels we have stayed in. The room was clean and spacious all with the mod cons needed for a pleasant and easy stay. The staff were friendly. The only issue I had with the hotel was finding it in the first place as there are no signs to the car park or its location, so make sure you have the post code to direct you. The hotel is right next to the Excel and lucky for us there was nothing going on there as they were preparing for the olympics, if you want something in London but not in the centre this is the hotel to go for, its right next to the DLR and within easy commute into the centre of London.

There's not much choice for places to eat, you have got the Fede Bar and grill which is in the hotel but the menu is limited and you have to get on the DLR to the next stop towards London to find places to eat.

Having said that I would stay at this hotel again and would definately recommended it, it surely wont disappoint.
