“Pleasant enough experience!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 13, 2014

Had lunch with family on a cold January day. The place was empty at 12:30. I guess lunchtime in the winter on a Monday is not going to be the busiest time.
Got a warm welcome and the food and drink was above average gastropub quality. The price was £66.93 for 3 main courses and one drink each plus 2 coffees.
That price included the hated 'London' standard 12.5% service charge.

“One of the best gastropub experiences I've had”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 8, 2014

I was a little put off by some of the reviews of the Fox & Grapes so I wasn't confident about arranging my birthday meal for three couples there. However, from beginning to end, it was excellent.

The wine list is varied and interesting and the food extremely good. I had game terrine followed by pheasant breast accompanied by a Bordeaux Merlot, topped off with sticky toffee pudding. The food couldn't have been much better. This really has been my best experience at a gastropub.

The service was polite and attentive without being intrusive, despite our position in the snug at the rear of the pub which is a little out of the way. At the end of the evening, the staff were happy to arrange cabs for us.

If you're willing to pay more than average and your experience is like ours, this gastropub will not disappoint. The snug, to the rear of the pub, is good for intimate dining while the main room is gorgeous.

“Overpriced averageness!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 18, 2013 via mobile

What a disappointment! The building and location is lovely and charming but shame about the food and service... Um what service? Our drinks were not poured for us once and we were not offered sides and when we realised we should have ordered some they even got that order wrong. The waiter didn't know what sauces they served with the steak and had to check with the kitchen. When you pay a premium you expect a premium. Over priced food but to give it credit it was tasty and my steak ( all £29 of it) was delishous and cooked well. Would we return? I doubt it. Not worth the credit card debt to eat here.

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 8, 2013 via mobile

Just came back from a lovely weekend staying (great room) and dining (delicious food) in the Fox and Grapes. Staff are lovely and attentive and we couldn't ask for better service. Will be coming back thank you.

“Should Have Curate's Egg On The Menu .... Very Mixed!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 30, 2013

On the plus side:
Very friendly (although rather slow) service; innovative seasonal menu; lovely atmosphere; & very nice surroundings. Crab salad, saag aloo soup, & scotch egg all very tasty & nicely executed & presented (but the scotch egg was advertised as 'haggis' & was, in fact, plain old sausagemeat).

On the minus side (in addition to slow service & non-haggis egg):
Steak & ale pie filling somewhat chewy, fatty, gristly & insipid (in fairness, removed from bill without question); very small portions throughout; & extremely poor value (compounded by charges for side-dishes).

In summary:
Could do quite a lot better!
