I am staggered by the previous poor review of the Loose Box. We wandered in while we were staying at the nearby Mint Hotel and had got bored with the Mint menu. The Loose Box was fabulous in every way. The staff were friendly, the menu was brief but interesting - unpretentious, very well-prepared British food, ethics a high priority - free range meat and eggs, fish from sustainable stocks, delicious bread baked in Lewisham, etc. etc. Specials are changed regularly (monthly I think). We returned quite a few times and never had a bad or indifferent meal. Braised venison pie came with a generous wedge of butternut squash and creamy mashed potatoes, beer battered hake with totally delicious chips (skins left on), Marsala poached figs with vanilla ice cream and toasted almond - this is just a small selection of dishes that exceeded our expectations (and I am fussy about food). They offer a good choice for vegetarians and their beer menu is exceptional, with draught beer and ale, as well as bottled beer and cider, several to satisfy 'real ale' enthusiasts and Siera Nevada for home-sick Americans.
We didn't find that the meals took particularly long to arrive, as the previous reviewer complained, but one must remember that the food is freshly prepared. If you are looking for MacDonalds, this is not it.
The restaurant/bar can get very busy. They deserve their success!! They are located on Horseferry Road, quite convenient if you are visiting Tate Britain, Westminster Abbey + Parliament, and even not that far from the London Eye. The nearest tube stations are St James Park, Victoria, Pimlico, and Westminster - none very close but several buses, including the 88 from Oxford Circus, Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square etc, stops very near.
