Description: The charmingly eccentric India Club Restaurant has remained much the same since its opening in 1946. Hidden up a flight of stairs, India Club is one of London’s best kept secrets. Enter a timewarp, with portraits of the Independence era on the walls, bottle-green leather chairs, red lino flooring and wooden laminate tabletops. It is a British curry house of the first generation. Authentic ‘home cooked’ South Indian cuisine at extraordinary value makes India Club an unforgettable dining experience.

This place was awful - food ready in a second, clearly reheated. Lino ripped and stained. Wont have minded if the staff had been polite. Hwoever they acted like we were unwelcome and unwanted.

Other reviewers who like The India Club seem to have it right. I have been going for several years and it is indeed unchanging, including during a very recent visit. I would add to all that positivity that it is above all a very civilised place: it does one good to be amongst such staff and customers.
I have rated its food as v good, though it is more enjoyable than outstanding. I have rated it as good for business, and it is, but not if you want to show-off. It just isn't that sort of a room.

It has been said "never go back to wherever it was ,as it won`t be the same anymore `--: However the India Club, never changes.. The sepia coloured photographs on the walls , the masala dosa with sambal and coconut chutney, the waiters ( like old soldiers they never die ), the clientelle- a mixture redolent of the Sub Continent, the English Bar, the old stagers who remember Fleet street as it was. Then there are pretty young things who are brought here , once, say by a relative, who then come back proudly year after year. Why ? Because it is authentic, One might imagine EM forster, Jan Morris, Pandit Nehru, and any variety of intelligent
India lovers eating, chatting ,drinking here. May it never change. !

How on earth the India Club can offer such a wide menu, at such low price and of such high quality is a mystery.

Approached through an unprepossessing door on the Strand, up a fairly grotty staircase, to the second floor and you will find this restaurant. We ate there on a Saturday evening and we felt, in the slightly dim light with old fashioned and simple furniture, to be back in India.

The food is basic but good. If you want wine bring a bottle (they do not charge corkage); they serve beer and, of course, lassis. The price are reasonable. Service was mixed: one excellent attentive waiter, one who seemed bored and uninterested. The clientele seemed to include quite a few who were repeat diners.

It is historically quite interesting, having opened in 1946 and lays claim to being one of the oldest Indian restaurants in the UK. Pandit Nehru ate here too! The floor below is The India Club's bar. It is no longer a club.

Ok if you want pukka service and swanky tables you won't enjoy the relaxed service and meal bar quality food. But if you've experienced the sub-continent or want a taste of everyday India this is the place to find it. The foods is tasty and straight forward, the room is, err, authentic, the staff were welcoming and kind on my visit. I will go again and introduce others to a unique eating place.
