Description: A short wander down Whitehall from Trafalgar Square brings you to the very heart of England: The Clarence! An elegant and indeed damned fine traditional British pub which has a fair claim to being the Prime Minister’s local, The Clarence embodies all that is great about British hospitality – hearty traditional food, delicious drinks and the warmest of welcomes. Fine traditional British pub fare is given the treatment it deserves by our crew of talented chefs who turn fresh seasonal ingredients into something akin to a little slice of heaven. Aside from the delicious lunch and dinner menus with their ever-changing accompaniment of specials we have beautifully crafted events menus which run from delicate canapés to glorious feasts and everything in between.

This is not the greatest pub in the city but I enjoy it on the odd occassion as an after work drinking spot, I would not recommend it for anything else. It is always quite busy and you will be lucky to find a place to sit. The atmosphere is good although it is difficult to maintain a conversation because of the sheer volume of noise. If you are a beer drinker then their is always an excellent selection and for London prices it is not too bad, however the food is fairly expensive and really just your average pub grub. I would say its only worth a visit if you are already in the area.

“I never knew I liked bulgur wheat”

The space is unbelievably charming, and the butternut squash and brie "salad" (on wild rice and brie) was terrific.

“Churchill Drank Here”

Nice old pub with a good selection of ales - try Adnams' Ghost Ship - and a nice, small menu. But the food is pretty expensive. If you don't mind the street noise, you can sit on an outside table.

“Is it a pub or a restaurant?”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 23, 2013

4 of us went in for lunch yesterday whilst seeing the sights of London. Very strange that it calls itself a pub but the men of our party were ushered away from the bar to wait for table service, whilst us two women were told that we would have to move because the table we were sitting at was reserved for 4 people (we explained that there were 4 of us). The food was ok - some pretty odd combinations though, such as pork chops with sweet potato mash and cream, given to my husband after he had ordered belly pork with bubble and squeak!
My rabbit casserole was tasty but only luke warm, and the other two in our party weren't bowled over by their food either. Outside on the board, as well as promoting itself as a pub, it also mentions coming in for a chat, but to be honest the piped music really put paid to that.
