“Tapas food”
Reviewed February 5, 2013

If going to a show at the Barbican this is quite a good option. Very tasty but tiny portions. They recommend 2 to 3 per person. We had 6 between us and it was just enough. Perhaps if we had had a sweet it would have been better, but we are not sweet people. They bring the food out as it is ready and whisk the dishes away as soon as they can - which makes it feel a bit rushed. Ideally another time we would probably order them in twos if they would let us - then you could have a breather in between!

The staff are very helpful. They have a small bar seating area at the front where we sat and had a drink before we went in and it was very pleasant and quite comfortable. However the chairs in the restaurant itself are really hard and unforgiving. You definitely do not want to linger after you have finished!

They had quite a good wine list if this is important to you - as it is to us.

Despite the uncomfortable chairs (which I think they should really do something about!) the food is definitely good enough to make us want to return.

“Tapas-style at the Barbican”
Reviewed January 10, 2013

We booked for lunch, here, prior to the New Year's Eve matinee ballet. The welcome from the staff and the general ambience were excellent. We were given a full explanation of the 'small plate' menu (more like raciones than tapas)and started by ordering 4 plates between the two of us. Presentation was superb - lamb and olive meatballs served in a small tagine whilst a duck confit came on a slate. All the dishes were tasty and satisfying and we couldn't resist ordering an
extra plate of pan-fried scallops with salsify puree and shaved truffles. With a side order of hand-cut chips, a lovely dessert for my wife and a drink each, the total bill came to just under £60 - good value for an enjoyable meal.
The value would have been even better if we'd had the advertised 'lunch offer' of any 6 plates for £27.00, but the staff did not appear to be aware of this offer! Nevertheless, we look forward to returning to the Barbican Lounge (and we'll insist on the offer if it's still available.)

“Very good”
Reviewed January 8, 2013

The Barbican Lounge is a tapas-oriented restaurant on the first floor of the Barbican Centre in London. my wife and I went there for lunch on 1st January, before a concert. My wife had been there already a few times with friends, for me it was the first time.

The ambience is very nice: our table was overlooking the terrace with its fountains and ponds; the decor is modern and well designed, the chairs comfortable, the service attentive.

The menu is based on tapas, that is small dishes, Spanish style. We selected a Spanish tortilla (small omelette); lamb and olives meatballs; smoked salmon and cheese croquettes with cheese; Malaysian chicken skewers; and duck confit risotto balls. To drink, a beer and a glass of wine. For dessert we shared a pear and mascarpone cheesecake, then espresso coffees.

Everything was very well cooked and served. Two minor flaws: the coffees arrived before the dessert (not unusual in English restaurant, but strange in a tapas place); and there was a minor problem with the credit card reader, which delayed us a bit.

Good value for money too, about £ 50.

On the whole, a very enjoyable experience: we are sure to come back whenever we have the opportunity to eat at the Barbican.

“A good start to the evening's performance”
Reviewed January 6, 2013

The immediate family were attending Complicite's Master and Margarita on my son's birthday in early January 2013 We decided to eat at the Barbican before the show intrigued by the 'tapas' type approach. We considered eating outside of the Barbican complex, but the early timing of the show, plus a menu that had something for everyone in our party, lead to us to opt for the Barbican Lounge.

We booked a table in advance - perhaps not critical, but the Lounge became pretty full during our meal and we were glad we had both arrived early and booked

We had 7 plates between the four of us, plus hummous and olives and a side order of fries. We went for 7 different 'small' plates wanting to try as many of the interesting dishes as possible - chicken satay, tiger prawns, ribs, artichokes and so on. As most of the plates contained 4 items sharing was easy. The helpful staff advised that the food would arirve as cooked, not altogether, as was the case - a constant stream of food arrived allowing us to properly sample each dish whilst still warm and savour the range of flavours. We shared two deserts - chocolate fondant and the mascorpone cheesecake.

The food was delightful in presentation and taste. It was served swiftly and the meal completed in a little over an hour. The amount of food, considering we are reasonably big eaters, was more than adequate. The Lounge has had a recent makeover - it is a comfortable and informal place for an interesting pre-show meal.

“We were pleasantly surprised”
Reviewed January 2, 2013

Needing to have quality food and drink for a last minute meeting
within the Barbican complex we headed to what we thought would fit the bill.
We were not disappointed.
The welcome was professional and not a problem that we hadn't booked in advance.
Because we hadn't booked we obviously didn't get the best table but we were quite cosy at a corner table for two. The food here comes in very sensible portions with good flavours. It's possible to eat and drink to a varied and satisfying level whilst still watching the cost.
Now, the outlook is typical Barbican concrete architecture and on a cold drab December day hardly inspiring. However if you found yourself "marooned" within the Barbican complex ( and on a sunny day ) you'd be quite happy with what's on offer.
We concluded our business and left refreshed.
We were pleasantly surprised.
