“Great Location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 14, 2011

My husband and I recently stayed for 8 nights at the Cumberland Hotel to celebrate our 40th anniversary. We spent part of our honeymoon in London and wanted to revisit our trip in 1971. The hotel is across the street from Marble Arch and Hyde Park. The Marble Arch tube is just around the corner as are convenient bus stops. Oxford Street is also around the corner and a few blocks down from the hotel is the famous Selfridges department store. Not only does it have beautiful merchandise, but it has a "food hall" where you can sit and have coffee, sandwiches, etc.
The Cumberland Hotel was very comfortable and the staff was friendly and helpful. We had a very quiet room on the sixth floor that had great air-conditioning. There isn't much in the room in the way of storage, but we were happy to end our days there. We had a package that included breakfast and for sure you won't go hungry. There are several different food stations to choose from, self-service, except for coffee or tea which is served to you.
The clientele is very diversified. You will see people of all different religions. The lobby is a great place to "people watch." You will also find the lobby quite interesting. It looks like a modern museum!
We very much enjoyed our stay.

We booked into this hotel for a romantic get away. The prices are not cheap and it looked on the Internet a great hotel. The check in was fine and efficient, the room, 8025 was not. The room just about fitted a double bed in. The desk was old and battered, the shower flooded the bathroom and the decor felt like a betting shop.. The breakfast was appalling and felt like something out of fawlty towers. Honestly, the hotel is all glitz in the foyer and nothing else. Stay elsewhere.

Stayed last night, part of a theatre package, and not disappointed. Fantastic location, clean rooms, very helpful staff, food lush! All in all very impressive. Will definitely be going back..

i have been coming to this hotel for the last many years, and the hotel seems to be getting worse every year. i am staying when travelling alone due to the convenient location but this time with my young family i was treated to some real shocking staff attitude and service.

firstly the rooms are terribly small, but i knew that and went there because of the location. bad mistake. for the first 4 days my keys would stop working and i had to leave my wife and 2 little kids in the corridor and run down to reactivate my key. i literally complained to everyone but they thought i was maybe spoiling the key by keeping it near my mobile etc. the lack of response was very annoying. finally after 4 days of frustration of not being listened to someone attended properly and changed the lock after which it was working fine.

room service was terrible, house keeping was terrible , nothing came on time. nobody picks the phone at the reception or concierge. the call center operators are extremely unhelpful and cold in their response.

the general hospitality was poor. it felt like we were not paying to stay. i guess they were so much in demand that they don't care how some of their guests feel. just because of their location they charge too much which i think is unjustified. highly overrated hotel. pledge never to stay there again with my family.

We have just returned from a 3 night stay at the Cumberland. If you are looking for a central location - this would be the hotel for you. We walked everywhere! The staff were really helpful, check in was fast, breakfast was brill - huge choice and our room was very comfortable.

We had two rooms here, opposite sides of the corridor. One was at the back, and one at the side overlooking Great Cumberland Place. The one at the back was smaller with single beds - and I think maybe they had thought we would put both children in that one, instead of one adult and one child in each, because the beds in the other room were bigger (not quite double). In any event, it didn't matter because there was no street noise in either and the air conditioning was not at all noisy. The beds were comfortable and the pillows were wonderful. We all slept really well on both nights. We had found a cheap rate for the rooms on Booking.com so thought it was very good value. I overheard someone at the desk ask for a room rate and it was well over £60 more than I had paid.
The hotel was clean, although the corridors and rooms look as though they could do with a lick of paint. The showers were big and water was hot and powerful. My only complaint was that I couldn't get warm water before I stepped into the shower, so it was a cold shock for a few seconds.
I was annoyed with the chambermaid who knocked at 8:30 and seemed annoyed that I was still in the room. Next day, she did the same and asked "When ARE you checking out?" in a voice that sounded like she was telling me to leave now. I told her I was not yet dressed, was then going to get breakfast, and go to a shop before I even thought about leaving. "Oh - so about an hour then?" she said. The checkout time was midday and that was what I was going to stick to. She wasnot happy.
Food was expensive - especially breakfast when all the kids wanted was a piece of bread or some cereal. However, there are plenty of places nearby where you can get food, including a small supermarket.
We will definitely go back.

Hi Megsnan

Thanks for the review. I am sorry about the maid incident I will ensure I address this with my Housekeeper. Worth mentioning we are investing in upgrading the bedroom corridors in the near future also.

Thanks again, look forward to welcoming you back to The Cumberland.

Kind regards
