“Luxury hotel”
Reviewed February 5, 2013

Stayed at this hotel for 2 nights, it was very nice, the staff was so nice and helpful. the room was very good, big and well equipt and with a feeling of luxury.
It is very central in the heart of London, the only negative was the firealarm wich ranged two times, the last time in the middle of the night, but booth times it was false alarm:)

I stayed in room 510 and it was very far away from th lifts, I had to walk for a while

We got off to a bad start and things got progressively worse. We had booked (and paid in advance for) an Executive River View room several months previously. The confirmation our travel agent received from Marriott stated a lower class of room which led to much argument back and forwards however they eventually conceded that we were correct.

We arrived after normal check-in time to be told our room wasn't ready, not a big problem, we had Sunday lunch (which was good) in the restaurant. Eventually our room was ready - we went there to find a tiny room with a put-u-up bed taking up most of what little floor space there was and no luggage. On querying reception we were told that this box room was indeed an 'Executive' room. To be fair the extra bed was removed right away and our luggage sent up.

On checking the 'Executive Lounge' we found it was similar to a third rate airport lounge, stiflingly hot and not a window in the place! Bear in mind that we were staying on the 30th and 31st of December (the price of the room more than doubled on the 31st) - did we receive anything special for all this extra money? Oh yes - a half bottle of sparkling wine!

We found the environs of the hotel very gloomy and a bit tatty - the best area is the restaurant with a view of the river and service there was OK. We were checking out on the 1st of Jan and found that breakfast wasn't being served until half an hour after the advertised time and on checking out we were presented with a bill for £340 for the night of the 30th - which we had paid several months earlier. We told staff at reception this, however they were insistent that we had not paid in advance so I was left with no option, as I had a flight to catch, but to pay again and argue later.

We reported this to our travel agent who dealt with Marriott on our behalf and eventually, after much argument we received a refund on January 17th with a promise of a letter of apology along with a free room upgrade on our next visit.

It is over a month later as I write this and, unsurprisingly, no such letter has been forthcoming. No matter - it will be a cold day in Hell before I stay there again. We visit London regularly and normally stay in Mayfair but chose this hotel to give us a view of the New Year fireworks. That apart Mayfair is a much better location for visitors.

Never again.

The Marriott County Hall was a very nice hotel with excellent facilities and a beautiful bar however:

Although it is in the centre of London, the price they were charging seemed a bit extreme particularly when there is a Holiday Inn near-by.

The breakfast (which was part of the room cost) was nice however the portion size was a bit small.

The room was very nice however was very cold and the thermostat did not work.

On my last night, the fire alarm was activated in another part of the hotel complex (i say complex as the entire county hall building is made up of a number of hotels, restaurants and tourist attractions) however no announcement was made (we were advised that once the fire alarm goes off, a PA announcement would be made telling us to stay put or evacuate) therefore some guest left the building and some stayed in their rooms.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the Thames.

Visiting London for a birthday celebration which took us for lunch at The Paramount Restaurant (great views of The City at Centrepoint), The Royal Opera House for a matinee ballet performance and then onto Phantom of The Opera in the evening. On arriving into London by train we sent our bags in a taxi onto the hotel and didn't get there until 4pm, where you are immediately hit by the immense grandeur of the building. Outside and in, Marriott have done a great job retaining the sense of importance for this historical London building whilst providing the luxurious trappings associated with the top tier of the Marriott quality.

Our bedroom overlooked The Thames, London Eye and Big Ben / The Houses of Parliament, was spatial and well appointed. Watching the sun setting behind Big Ben gave three very different stunning photo opportunities to capture an iconic memory of the trip and London (daytime, sundown, night).

We used the leisure facilities which were clean and elegant. The swimming pool is more functional than recreational and had I have taken my children (10 & 12) I think they would have liked it but not loved it. The gym is extremely well appointed with a lot of effort focused here. My only disappointment came at the fact the jacuzzi and saunas were individual to the sexes in the relevant changing areas. Therefore as two couples we could not all sit together relax and plan our next adventure!

The food is upto wonderful standards and every bit as I have come to expect from Marriott. The birthday cake was sublime!

In summary, this place is at a great location and well worth the money.

Great service through. Breakfast was superb with very attentive staff. Great luxury feel to the hotel and rooms. Typical Marriott high standards of cleanliness, standard of room Anne quality. Bath was the fastest filling bath in the universe. Night cap in the bar in the evening was very good - excellent selection (a whole page of different Gin) and with a view of the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben. Stayed 1 night for a theatre night. Great treat.

We stayed at this hotel for Christmas, 2012 and more than anything appreciated the excellent, central location.
Its actually a sub standard Marriott hotel in many ways except for the room rate! The rooms are acceptable though very small and not all rooms have a River Thames view. Our room at the end of a very long walk looked obliquely at the London Eye.
The hotel bar was laughable with no draft beer (this is England!!) and bottles of some obscure London lager being sold at rip-off prices. Its my first experience of being handed my bar bill at 11.30pm so the bar could close! (Happy Xmas guys!)
The restaurant staff, however, tried very hard to please and the food was excellent. Apparently the bar and restaurant operation is by an outside firm which may explain some of the appalling customer service.
The hotel has the great advantage of a location opposite Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. This location offers easy walking distance to many central London attractions.

I booked a room on points with Marriott!

I arrived in the morning, and was pleasantly greeted. Though I had not requested an early check-in, a room was ready and I was given my key. Without request, I had been upgraded to a wonderful suite that overlooked the Thames, Parliament and Big Ben! I had the PERFECT VIEW!

The location is great. Most days I just walked to Trafalgar Square. If I needed the tube I had the option of the Waterloo or Westminster stops. This offered plenty of different routes and easy accessibility.

I was there for 5 days including a weekend. The lounge was like any other Marriott lounge. This isn't bad, though compared to the rest of the hotel, was unimpressive. With the lounge being closed during the weekend, I was given complimentary buffet breakfast in the restaurant. I expected the usual fruit, bread, pastries. Instead, there was a full 6 hot items and a great spread of exotic fruits and unique pastries.

Absolutely wonderful stay!

Room Tip: Make sure you get a river view!
