“Very good value for London”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 21, 2013

My wife and I booked 4 nights dinner bed and breakfast through National Holidays 14 - 18 January.
The Hotel is big and has a gym and swimming pool.
On arrival we were informed that our breakfast would be 7am PROMT which was not good especially for older people who were in our group.
We had our breakfast at 7am on the first morning but gradually came later up until 8.30am on the Friday morning.
The Buffet breakfast was very good with plenty selection. The dinners were at 6.30pm every evening. Not much variety but very good and fresh unlike some of Mationals hotels where I have been served frozen or tinned rubbish,
Overall I could not fault the quality of the food. The rooms were spacious, warm with adequate facillities. However the rest of the hotel including the dining area was very cold and we had to ware thick clothing throughout our stay.
The Hotel is situated at Canary Wharf and about 30 minutes from the city centre from the station which is 10 minutes walk .

When I arrived I thought I was in for a lovely weekend because the hotels grand entrance was quite impressive but it turned out to be a total disappointment.
The heating was broken all weekend and nothing was visibly being done to improve this. Without going into too much detail here are the main points:
Rooms ok but very dated and in need of repair as wallpaper was hanging off and beds were solid!
Food was similar to a cheap all inclusive abroad- nothing impressive but edible.
Couldn't get an answer from room service or concierge for a good 15/20 mins.
Public areas of hotel were freezing so made way back to hotel room with a drink. Everyone wearing coats and scarves in the bar.
Spa was actually lovely but shouldn't be at a charge for residents. Went in to warm up and try to help the cold which i had got over the weekend.
Window in rooms don't open and heating panel not easy to change temperature. Everything which seemed to be available was at a charge even towels in the spa.
Extended checkout time which was at a charge of £10 per hour which I don't mind but as we had sat in the cold all weekend I thought they may have waiver this fee.
Wouldn't return!

After booking with an outside travel agency, contacted the hotel direct to upgrade, they did ring me to confirm my requests but could not confirm until closer to travel date, thought nothing of it till we arrived at room, and...
Perfect, massive room with sofa, dining table with 4 chairs???, bookcase and books, whirlpool bath, box of chocs...
Food a little same every day, but try keeping 400+ people happy, not easy
Great location for Docklands, Canary Wharf, East End, DLR 5 mins away, Thames Clipper 10mins away,
Only Wifi in public rooms but routers in corridor? maybe only for hotel use???

Room Tip: Floor 11 upwards

Stayed here for Two nights during the London 2012 Paralympic Games as it was two nights for £99pp via superbreak and was in the vicinity of a DLR station (South Quay). The Rooms are quite Dated in decoration but have all of the required amenities, Flat screen Tv,shower/bath,Wardrobe.

This Was a Twin room with large amount of space on each side of the beds (two single beds pushed together). The room has more than enough storage space for a stay of 2-3 nights with a chest of drawers/mirror and bedsite cabinets for each bed.

Only Complaints are the Dining room process (If it is included in your booking) as all that you are told in the instructions is to bring your room key. I would class your room key as the card you put into the door, but it isn't,it's the slip of paper with your room information on,though the waiter at the entrance to the dining from should have a guest list.

These Rooms do have Air conditioning, which actually does keep the room cool and can be left on for the whole time you are away from the room/hotel. From the rooms you can hear DLR trains passing the other side of the Hotel, even though it is a good 100m+ from the track

South Quay DLR is within 5-10 minutes walking distance. The nearest shop is Londis across the road though there is a Tesco opposite South Quay DLR Station with more Selection

Stayed for one night while visiting the Ice Sculpting Festival on Canary Wharf. Very surprised to get it for only £59, room only. Location is great for Canary Wharf, 5 mins walk if that, to the shops and all restaurants and Jubilee Line and DLR. Did not eat there so cannot comment on the food. Although it says there is some Wifi in the rooms we were on level 10 and had none at all. Stil surprises me that these large hotels do not have free wifi in the bedrooms. However it was a truly freezing weekend and the room was warm, there was plenty of hot water for baths and we had asked for a room overlooking the river which they mentioned when we got there and they provided, so good customer service. Bed was comfortable, although a traditional double which is unusally small these days for hotels. Decor is a bit old fashioned but it provided everything we needed and would stay again if we needed to be near Canary Wharf.

We stayed at the hotel for 7 days over New Year. Our boys (14 year olds) were on one level and we were 3 levels above. So every morning in order to shower we had to take our towels down three floors. A great idea would be to create some twin rooms beside double rooms to create family spaces.
Breakfast was great particular as the hotel staff were very helpful and were able to supply my wife with gluten free bread. Much appreciated,it made her trip.
The rooms are a little tired but very clean. The great thing is the bed which was very comfortable.
To get to Canary Wharf tube station is very easy. Walk out the door towards the water,so turn left then turn left and then turn left at the driveway that has the security gate on it. Go past the security gate and turn left then walk to the water. Walk down to the footbridge and then walk over the footbridge and go in the door to Canary Wharf and follow the signs.

Room Tip: Higher up the better

Stayed for 4 nights with my wife. Booked a double room which was fine and the food was also very good. Only a 5 minute walk to the tube, docklands railway and shopping centre. Great location for sightseeing.
