Copthorne Tara Hotel London Kensington
Ranked #466 of 1,077 Hotels in London
Reviewed April 16, 2014

The main positives of this hotel are its location, car park and its staff. They are friendly, helpful and attentive. Maria in particular is a lovely lady who has worked there for 30 years and she looks after you like a mother in the Breakfast lounge. Tea was 'topped up' andshe had a wonderfully warm manner. The location is close to a tube station and the beautiful boroughs of Kensington and Chelsea. The interior of the hotel is a little dated and our bed had seen much better days, there was a rip in the bed base and the bed came away from the wall easily and pillows hung over the end in the night, so we didn't have a particularly comfortable night.

One point which is concerning is the lack of security at the hotel. There is open access from Reception to the hotel lifts and bedroom corridors. A simple build of an extra wall with key access only to the lift area, would help guests to feel safer. As it is, anyone can walk in the hotel and get access to the bedroom corridors. We left our cases in the baggage store room, as we arrived too early for check in. when we returned to collect them, we just helped ourselves, and there was no system in place for checking that you were hotel guests and there was no paperwork issued to identify your luggage items. In central London, I would expect better security measures than this in a major hotel.

Arrived at 5pm, to be out for 6pm for black tie dinner. Husband then realised he hasn't got cuff links...after contacting a friend (to no avail), we ask Joshua on the front desk who immediately said no problem sir and gave him his own to use for the evening. Great service!

Staff couldn't have been more helpful especially as when we were checking in the fire alarm went off and the hotel was evacuated. When we eventually checked in it was late and we went to the bar for a drink. Generally the hotel is clean, although dated, and feels very functional and 'beige' we were supposed to stay for four nights but our bed was so small that we ended up checking out. They very kindly offered us a room with a bigger bed (20cm wider making it a queen size) but we are used to a bigger bed and knew another two sleepless nights wouldn't make for a good trip!

I'd happily stay here if I was travelling alone on business but not for a leisure trip. The budget price wasn't worth the small bed!

Though from outside unattractive , the Copthorne Tara Kensington turned out to be an excellent choice for our recent week in London. Our club floor room was spacious, comfortable, and very quiet. In the club lounge we enjoyed a good breakfast every morning, and cappuccinos and teas several times a day. The club floors also have free Internet access. The international, multi lingual staff was friendly and courteous. The location is a short walk from the Highstreet Kensington underground station , with direct line to Trafalgar Square . We took the Picadilly Line from Heathrow, and with one change at Earl's Court station we got to the hotel inexpensively. Close to Kensington Palace Gardens and Hyde Park. We walked to the Portobello Rd. flea market and back.

Room Tip: I recommend the Club rooms as they include free breakfast and free Internet access. Sometimes they h...

The room was very run down and cupboards actually had cracks in them.

To make it worse: unlike any other hotels you need to open an account first to order room service or to have in-house restaurants coffee/dinners put on your room bill. The problem? They do not tell you that at check-in.

When after a very long and tiresome day at 10pm I wanted to order food from room service, I was told that I had to go downstairs first to open an account with reception to be able to order anything at all.

In the end I was too tired to argue this ridiculous method and skipped dinner that night. My loss, I know. But it shouldn't be like this in a four star hotel.

This is the first time I have experienced a system like that. Why not automatically open an account upon check-in? This is a guest unfriendly system.

Never coming back. I am not paying for cracked furniture and ridiculous rules.

Fabulous hotel. The staff could not do enough from the moment we arrived. They were so welcoming and pleasant. We ate dinner in the restaurant and it was delicious. Breakfast was included in our stay and there was a fantastic variety of food available. The location is ideal for central London. Would definitely stay here again.
